I am currently looking into whether there is an easy way to equip IKEA Besta furniture with casters. Specifically, I want to make the often bulky cabinets or sideboards mobile on wheels, so they can be quickly moved when needed without having to fully disassemble or perform heavy lifting.
I am aware that IKEA does not offer casters as a standard option for Besta. Therefore, I am interested to know if anyone knows practical solutions for attaching casters to these modular units in a simple and stable way—perhaps using existing drill holes, adapters, or recommended caster models that work well.
It is also important to me that the casters are load-bearing and that the furniture does not become wobbly or unstable just by adding wheels.
I look forward to your experiences or tips, thanks in advance!

if there is an easy way to equip IKEA BESTA furniture with castersYes, it works well with used furniture feet or casters that have a screw-on mounting plate. You just need to buy suitable casters with screw fastenings, pre-drill holes on the underside, and screw them in firmly. Important: pay attention to load capacity, at least 30 kg (66 lbs) per caster, preferably more. This way the piece of furniture remains stable.

if anyone knows practical solutions for easily and securely attaching caster wheels to modular furnitureBased on my research, there are no original caster wheels from IKEA for the BESTA system. However, the underside of the furniture is sturdy enough to screw on caster wheels with plate mounts. Important criteria for a durable solution are:
- Use swivel casters with a sufficiently large base plate (at least 5x5 cm [2x2 inches]) for better load distribution
- Pre-drill the mounting holes to prevent splitting the particleboard
- Casters with locking brakes to limit mobility when needed
Mounting the casters on the supporting cross beams of the furniture base increases stability. A simple option you might consider is to buy common furniture casters from a hardware store, modify them if necessary, and screw them on. Alternatively, some users offer custom-made wooden adapters to enlarge the mounting surface for the casters.
I do not recommend casters with plastic mounts, as these can quickly wear out or break.

Mounting holes to prevent particleboard from splittingI would like to raise a critical point here: Most BESTA components are made from particleboard with a melamine coating, which is much less durable compared to solid wood or plywood. Therefore, the idea of simply screwing on casters without carefully considering the load is actually inadequate.
The risk that screws will loosen or that the casters will distort the furniture should not be underestimated. Instead of relying solely on screws for mounting, it might be worth considering additional reinforcement using metal brackets or narrow wooden strips to secure the casters more effectively.
If the furniture is moved frequently, permanently weakened areas could lead to lasting damage. The question is whether simple measures like pre-drilling and using standard casters will really provide satisfactory long-term stability, or if it would be better to opt for other solutions, such as a sturdy wooden base with casters, onto which the BESTA components can be placed.
I see this issue mainly with larger units and less so with smaller lowboards.
