Hello everyone,

A few months ago, I bought and assembled a Billy bookcase from IKEA. At first, everything was fine, but over time the bookcase has warped noticeably, so the shelves no longer sit at right angles and the whole structure feels unstable.

My question is: Why does my BILLY bookcase warp after some time?

The bookcase is placed against an exterior wall, not directly by a window, but in a room with somewhat fluctuating humidity. All the shelves were installed according to the instructions, and I haven’t placed any heavy or unevenly distributed loads on it.

Could this be related to the material, or is it more likely caused by environmental factors? Are there ways to prevent the warping or to fix it afterward?

I look forward to your insights and advice!

Warping often occurs due to fluctuations in moisture levels. Make sure not to place the shelf in areas that are too damp or too dry. Reinforcing it with brackets can provide additional stability.

Hello posoni,

I am familiar with this issue. BILLY shelves are made of particleboard with a thin veneer coating. These are quite sensitive to changes in moisture because the material can swell and warp. Especially when a shelf is placed against an exterior wall, temperature and humidity fluctuations can cause parts of the material to expand or contract in certain areas.

In my experience, it helps to position the shelf as far away as possible from radiators or damp spots and to allow for some air circulation. Aligning the shelves using angle brackets or screw systems can also provide additional stability.

Warped shelves can be replaced with some basic DIY skills or stabilized with extra bracing.

Hello posoni,

I would like to explore this topic further because misunderstandings often occur here.

Basically, BILLY shelves usually warp at the back panels or shelves because these parts are made of particleboard or MDF and are only thinly laminated.

Causes for warping can be:

1. Moisture: As Ramon4 already mentioned, these materials absorb moisture and expand unevenly.

2. Load: Unevenly distributed or overly heavy loads can deform the shelf.

3. Assembly: If the shelf is not assembled at a perfect right angle or is loose, this worsens the problem.

4. Temperature changes: Especially with strong fluctuations in the environment, the materials expand and contract slightly.

Tips for checking and fixing:

- Use a spirit level to check if the shelf is really straight.
- If not, adjust it with small wedges or shims.
- Reinforce the shelf with metal brackets that can be attached on the inside.
- You might also replace the back panel or additionally screw it in certain places.

This often helps to at least minimize warping.

If you are handy: Replacing the back panel with a stable, thin multiplex plywood sheet works wonders.

Thank you very much for the detailed explanation. That clears up a lot. The shelf is indeed placed against an exterior wall, which can be a bit cooler in winter and experiences fluctuating humidity in summer.

I will definitely check that.

Regarding reinforcement: Are there any recommended brackets or screws from IKEA itself, or would you suggest using other hardware?

It is also important for me to know whether additional stabilization will provide long-term benefits, or if I should just accept the shelf as it is.

Retrofitting stabilization can definitely help, especially when applied at critical points – for example, at the back panel and the shelves.

The original BILLY back panel is relatively thin, which unfortunately provides little stability. A tip: Adding extra brackets on the side panels and under the shelves often prevents warping.

Regarding fittings: IKEA usually does not supply additional brackets for retrofitting. It’s better to use small, sturdy metal brackets from a hardware store with suitable screws. It is important to use screws that do not create large holes in the particleboard.

In the long run, this should significantly reduce deformation.
