Hello everyone,

I have a problem with my IKEA Malm nightstand, which unfortunately has water stains from glasses or bottles. The stains are not just superficial but seem to have penetrated the material somewhat. Does anyone know of effective home remedies to successfully remove these water stains from the Malm nightstand without damaging the surface? It is the white lacquer finish (ABS edge, coated surface), so I want to avoid using any harsh chemicals. I would be very grateful for tips that have worked for you, preferably with a brief explanation of how the remedy was applied.

Best regards!

Hello Biron40,

I had a similar issue with my Malm nightstand. Water stains on coated surfaces can be quite tricky. A common home remedy is a mixture of water and vinegar in a 1:1 ratio. It’s important to apply the solution lightly to a soft cloth and gently dab the stain rather than rubbing. Vinegar can dissolve the stains without damaging the finish if used sparingly.

Alternatively, I’ve also read that carefully polishing with a small amount of toothpaste (not gel!) on a damp cloth can help. However, you need to be very gentle, as toothpaste can be slightly abrasive and may damage the surface if too much pressure is applied.

After treatment, it’s essential to always wipe the surface with clear water and a clean, dry cloth to remove any residue.

I hope this helps you!

That sounds interesting, thank you for the tip! I can really understand how frustrating it is when water stains remain on such a beautiful piece of furniture. Often, you can't immediately tell if the surface will be damaged, and fear of using the wrong products can delay quick cleaning.

If possible, I would recommend testing the mixture on an inconspicuous spot first before treating all the stains – this provides some reassurance and helps avoid unpleasant surprises.

Maybe someone else has an idea or a safe method that ensures maximum care, especially since, as Biron40 mentions, it concerns the coated Malm surface.

Don’t despair; usually, with some patience and the right approach, good results can be achieved! 🙂

For targeted cleaning of water stains on painted or laminated furniture surfaces like the IKEA Malm nightstand, I recommend a structured approach:

1. First, check if the stain is only superficial. Wipe the surface with a soft cloth and lukewarm water.

2. For stronger stains: Dampen a cloth with a 50% white vinegar and 50% water solution and place it on the stain without rubbing. After about 10 minutes, wipe off with a damp cloth.

3. If this is not effective enough, the next step is to apply a mild toothpaste (not gel, fluoride-free) very gently to the stain with a soft cloth. Use light pressure and avoid rubbing too hard.

4. Afterwards, thoroughly wipe the area with a damp cloth and let it dry well.

5. Important: Do not use abrasive sponges or aggressive cleaners such as acetone, alcohol, or ammonia, as these can damage the surface.

This method is scientifically supported and has shown good results on laminated furniture. It should at least significantly reduce water stains without damaging the paint or laminate.
