Hello everyone,
I am looking for practical and specific advice on how to effectively prevent damage to IKEA Hemnes furniture. I am particularly interested in tips that go beyond basic maintenance. I have often read that material fatigue, exposure to moisture, and improper loading can cause problems that eventually lead to warping or finish damage.
Does anyone have experience with how to optimize the durability of Hemnes dressers, beds, or wardrobes? Which maintenance products are recommended, and which technical solutions—such as bumpers, additional reinforcements, or protective coatings—make sense? How does the wood respond to varying indoor climates?
I would appreciate detailed explanations or even simple step-by-step guides that help preserve the appearance and functionality of the furniture over the long term. Thanks in advance!

Good morning Kibe36,
for wall mounting Hemnes, I recommend the following approach:
- Use the wall fasteners provided by IKEA, as they are designed to support the weight of the furniture.
- Check the condition of the wall, preferably solid masonry. For drywall, use special anchors suitable for light walls.
- The attachment points on the furniture are marked in the assembly instructions—do not improvise here to avoid cracks in the wood or deformations.
- Work carefully with a level to hang the furniture straight.
- When drilling, be careful not to drill too deep or too wide; if in doubt, use several smaller anchors instead.
The main thing is to secure the furniture safely to prevent tipping and to apply pressure to the wood only at the intended points. Never use improvised hooks or screws that do not meet IKEA standards.

I really liked your question because I often feel unsure about the best way to care for my HEMNES wardrobe. For me, it’s also important to keep an eye on the indoor climate.
In the past, I used to slam the floorboards without paying much attention to the wood’s natural movement. That quickly led to small gaps or loose hinges. That’s why I now try to position the furniture properly and regularly check the screws.
Thanks for the tip! I’ve now got a hygrometer – it’s basically saved my life because it really helps me pay better attention.

Keep the indoor air humidity between 40–60% relative humidity to minimize the wood’s swelling and shrinking.

Here is a small maintenance routine I recommend:
- Regularly dust with a microfiber cloth to avoid abrasive particles.
- Treat two to three times a year with a high-quality wood oil or wax, especially in winter.
- For minor scratches, you can touch up with suitable repair wax or wood fillers.
- Avoid harsh cleaners, as wood scratches easily.
This will help maintain the appearance and function for years.
I have often had issues with small dents and scratches on my HEMNES furniture. Sometimes this just happens in everyday life from bumps or moving things around.
Since I started using soft pads under all decorative items and avoid stacking heavy objects on top, the condition has improved significantly. Especially when there are children in the house, this helps keep the surface intact.
I think it’s important not to get discouraged – furniture can be restored well, but prevention saves a lot of effort and money.
