Hello everyone,
I am currently planning to redesign my small living room and definitely want to use the IKEA Platsa system because I really appreciate its modularity and versatile customization options. However, I am facing some challenges as my room is only about 12 square meters (130 square feet) and I want to create as much storage space as possible without making the room feel cramped or cluttered.
My main question is: How can I use the IKEA Platsa system most efficiently in small rooms? I am thinking about smart combinations of modules, clever internal organization (e.g. with boxes or shelves), and possibly using back panels or doors to maximize storage and keep things organized without visually overwhelming the space.
Do you have any specific tips or ideas on how to plan Platsa optimally in a small room – maybe examples or experiences with especially space-saving or versatile modules? Thank you in advance for your suggestions!

A good starting point is to make full use of the wall height. Platsa modules can be stacked, giving you a lot of extra storage space vertically. Also, doors instead of open compartments are practical to keep things organized and create a tidy appearance. Use inner boxes for small items to keep everything neat.
Hello Beatrice,
I would like to add that with small rooms, it is especially important to take advantage of the flexibility of Platsa. Since the system is modular, you can customize the elements to your needs or modify them later. I recommend:
- Planning with a wide base rather than tall towers if the ceiling height is limited.
- Using drawers, as they make storage more accessible than open shelves.
- Interior divisions with adjustable boxes to optimize storage space.
- If possible, choose light-colored white back panels to visually enlarge the space.
Another consideration is whether to use Platsa alongside other furniture or as a standalone wall solution. Especially in very small rooms, a wall solution can help concentrate the furniture area and make the space feel more open.
Feel free to ask if you need help with selecting the exact modules!

My recommendation: alternate doors with glass panels and open shelves to break up the overall look and make the space feel airier. Adding small plants or decorative accessories on the open compartments brings life without making it look cluttered.
Don’t worry, with Platsa you can easily achieve “small but impressive”!
I am adding some practical recommendations:
- Measure the room precisely and plan ahead using the IKEA planner to avoid measurement errors.
- Use narrow modules (e.g., 40 cm (16 inches) wide) instead of wider ones to stay more flexible.
- Interior organization is essential: use different inserts for various items (e.g., storage boxes, drawer organizers).
- Installing plinths (kickboards) under the modules can make cleaning easier and make the space appear lighter.
- Where possible, choose light colors and avoid too many different fronts to create a cohesive look.
These tips are based on my research and personal planning experience with small spaces.
