Hello everyone,

I have an IKEA Malm bedside table that wobbles noticeably when I slide it across my wooden floor. It seems that the connection between the legs and the main body is not completely rigid, which causes the bedside table to move slightly when I shift it for cleaning or rearranging. My question is: What is the best way to secure or stabilize the IKEA Malm bedside table so that it doesn’t wobble when sliding it, without affecting its appearance or requiring major modifications? Are there any recommended methods, specific accessories, or small tricks I should consider? Thanks in advance for your tips!

Hello!

I would recommend tightening the connecting screws under the drawers again. They often loosen over time. If that doesn’t help, you can stick furniture glides with rubber pads underneath; this stabilizes the furniture and protects the floor.

Hello Kiusdeo,

I understand your problem very well, as many Malm nightstands tend to be a bit wobbly, especially when moved frequently. An important point is that the connecting screws in IKEA furniture are often only hand-tightened and designed mainly for static loads. For example, if you slide the nightstand on a wooden floor, sometimes the screws not being tightened enough is enough to cause instability.

That is definitely a good first step. Another option would be to use felt pads or special non-slip pads that not only protect the floor but also keep the nightstand in place. Attaching anti-slip materials to the legs can also help.

A more stable solution is to install small furniture brackets inside to reinforce the connection between the carcass and the legs without them being visible from the outside. Often, however, the screws and pads are enough to reduce the wobbling.

Hope this helps!

Hello everyone,

to add to the previous suggestions: Sometimes the wobbling is caused by slightly uneven floors. In such cases, using small furniture shims or adjusting the furniture glides so that the nightstand always stands firmly on all legs can help.

This is a very good idea, especially if you have already checked and tightened the screws but the nightstand still feels unstable. These brackets are often inexpensive and easy to install, making a noticeable difference.

If the legs themselves are slightly damaged or the screw holes are worn out, you can additionally use wood glue or wooden dowels before attaching the brackets. It is important to allow the furniture to dry sufficiently under no load when using wood glue.

I hope this expands the range of solutions for you.

Hi,

simply tighten the screws and attach non-slip felt pads to the legs. This prevents wobbling and protects the floor. You don’t need to do anything else.

Thanks for the tips so far!

@Laurence: You’re right, the floor isn’t perfectly level; there are slight uneven spots. I briefly considered using furniture shims, but unfortunately, that would spoil the look for me.

How sturdy are those small furniture brackets? I don’t want to modify the nightstand, just stabilize it—are there solutions that can be attached unseen on the inside? And what exactly are the screws for? Are they only for the drawer runners, or do they also hold the legs?

That’s exactly why I’m asking—it still wobbles a bit. I suspect there’s some play where the legs connect to the body of the nightstand. I’m open to any suggestions.
