Hello everyone,

I have a Besta system from Ikea, which I really appreciate for its flexibility and modular design. However, I have been considering whether and how these cabinets can be retrofitted with glass fronts, as I would like to achieve a slightly more elegant or modern look.

My exact question is: Is there a way to add glass fronts to Ikea Besta cabinets afterward, without having to buy completely new doors or replace the entire carcass? If so, what are the practical steps and necessary materials? Are there perhaps special attachments or glass panels that can simply be installed?

I look forward to your tips and experiences, whether DIY solutions or official IKEA parts. Thanks in advance!

Ikea only offers glass fronts as complete doors.

That’s correct. To get a true glass front, you have to replace the entire door. Retrofitting by simply attaching glass to existing doors doesn’t work. I also recommend using original parts or building your own glass frame.

I’m wondering why anyone would bother upgrading old Besta doors with glass panels when there are already suitable solutions available directly from Ikea.

You could almost say that such retrofit solutions are a form of dissatisfaction—why not simply replace the doors and then enjoy the glass features? Everything else sounds like a half-baked DIY solution.

But fine, if DIY enthusiasts find it fun, that’s okay. Just don’t expect professional quality.

I think that’s a valid question. Often, the reasons come down to budget or individuality – people want a combination of their existing fronts and glass, or specific colors that Ikea doesn’t offer.

That’s why many users are interested in finding their own solutions, even if these are more technically demanding. Hence the demand for retrofit options.

Every solution has its pros and cons, and the effort should be assessed realistically.

To conclude, I would like to summarize:

- Retrofitting glass fronts on Ikea Besta units is technically challenging and rarely achievable entirely with original parts.
- The best approach is usually to replace them with official glass doors or compatible third-party products.
- Custom builds are possible but require craftsmanship, precise measurements, and suitable materials (e.g., tempered safety glass, appropriate frame moldings).
- Glass films can be a simple alternative if only the appearance of glass is desired without actual glass panels.

It is always important not to compromise safety and stability when in doubt.

I hope this summarizes the discussion well!
