ᐅ Every time I rearrange my Kallax, it becomes louder when opening.

GaumarcoHello everyone,
I have a somewhat unusual problem with my Kallax shelving unit from Ikea: Whenever I rearrange the furniture in the room or move it around multiple times, I feel like the door hinges change, and the doors become noticeably louder when opened than before. This has happened several times now, and I’m wondering what might be causing it.
I checked whether any screws had loosened, but didn’t find anything unusual. I also paid attention to uneven floor surfaces. The noise sounds like increased friction or as if the hinges suddenly start to creak.
Could this possibly be related to the static load on the furniture or warping when it’s placed in different spots? Or maybe the hinges have somehow shifted? I would really appreciate any insights and tips on how I can get my shelving unit to open smoothly again. Thank you!

Hi,
check if the screws on the hinges are really tight. Often, a small adjustment or a slight tightening is enough.
The door itself should also sit flush; sometimes moving things around can cause slight changes in tension.
You might also try applying some lubricant to the hinges, which usually helps.

Good morning,
I’d like to take a closer look at your issue, as it’s quite common for furniture to behave differently after being moved.
1. Mechanical stress: The Kallax shelf is generally quite sturdy, but changing its location can alter the static forces acting on the joints. If the floor is not perfectly level, slight warping can occur, which in turn puts extra strain on the hinges. Especially with wooden furniture, this can cause minimal distortion over time, affecting the sound when opening.
2. Hinge adjustment: Even if the screws appear tight, the alignment can shift. The hinges on Ikea Kallax units are usually adjustable in three dimensions: height, depth, and lateral offset. Moving the unit might have caused a slight misalignment, which is best corrected by removing the doors and carefully readjusting the hinges.
3. Lubrication/material friction: Some hinges become noisier over time if they aren’t regularly lubricated or if dust has settled inside. When rearranging, the shelf is often moved around, redistributing dust particles. Thorough cleaning and applying a bit of silicone or Teflon spray can help here.
My question: Were the doors still attached while moving the unit? And have you noticed if the noise occurs immediately after relocating or only after a few days?
If you like, I can guide you step by step on how to properly adjust and lubricate the hinges.

Hey Gaumarco! 🙂
I know this problem really well! After moving or rearranging furniture, everything sometimes feels a bit “off” – especially the doors.
What always helps me: a little patience, a drop of lubricating oil, and a good sense of humor ;-)
That’s spot on! Sometimes it’s just metal rubbing against metal, and that small drop of oil works like magic.
I didn’t know that! Thanks for the tip. I really like when you can fine-tune the doors, it really gives the shelf a proper upgrade.
I’d also check if small wood chips or crumbs have gotten stuck inside the hinge area – that can definitely cause loud noises when opening.
Good luck with the screwing and oiling! 🙂
