Hello everyone, I recently bought a KALLAX shelf unit from IKEA and unfortunately noticed that some of the boards were slightly chipped when unpacking and assembling. There are small cracks and splinters, especially along the edges, even though I was very careful during assembly. My question is: what has been your experience with how IKEA handles complaints in such cases? Do they simply replace the boards, or is it necessary to deal with extensive proof and lengthy procedures? What tips do you have if I want to claim the damage? Thanks in advance for any help!

Slightly chipped when unpacking and assembling Unfortunately, that’s quite common with particleboard furniture like KALLAX. In my opinion, the expectations for this kind of furniture are generally too high. Why complain? The item is inexpensive, and a few chips are part of the DIY charm! IKEA isn’t aiming to deliver a personal work of art, but a functional piece of display furniture.G

Regarding complaints: It is important to document the damage immediately and inform IKEA as soon as possible. Based on my experience, they are quite accommodating if you remain factual.

For clarification: KALLAX is made of coated wood fiberboard (MDF or particleboard) with a laminated finish. Chipping on the edges may indicate prior damage during transport, faulty surface treatment, or rough handling.
Legally, IKEA is responsible for defects in new goods if these are present at the time of delivery. Chips that are recognized by the retailer as proven defects generally must be replaced. Important: Damage caused by accidents or self-inflicted defects is not covered.
Recommendation: Report any issues as early as possible, preferably in-store or by phone, and insist on goodwill or a replacement. This is often the most effective approach.
