Hello everyone,
Some time ago, I bought a few Malm furniture pieces from Ikea, especially dressers and nightstands from this series. Unfortunately, I am increasingly noticing that some of the surfaces and edges are slightly warping – in some cases, the fronts are bowing, and the drawers no longer slide smoothly. I have done some research and suspect that the material (particleboard with a foil coating) is particularly sensitive to moisture and temperature changes.
My specific question: What measures do you recommend to effectively prevent warping in Malm furniture? Are there particular care or storage methods that help keep the material stable? I am interested in practical tips that can be applied in everyday life, as well as basic advice on what to consider regarding placement and use to maintain the furniture’s shape and stability for as long as possible.
I would really appreciate any helpful responses!

Hello iwandu,
Your observations are correct. Malm furniture is often made from engineered wood, such as particleboard, which is coated with a decorative foil or melamine. Unfortunately, this makes it vulnerable to moisture, as the material can swell and warp or develop waves.
For preventive protection, I recommend not placing the furniture in damp areas, such as directly next to a washing machine or in bathrooms. The location should be as dry as possible with a stable room temperature between 18 and 22 degrees Celsius (64 and 72 degrees Fahrenheit). Temperature fluctuations can also damage the foil.
Cleaning is also important: avoid using overly wet cloths—dusting is often sufficient—and if you do clean, be sure to wipe away any excess moisture immediately.
Additionally, strong sunlight exposure should be avoided, as UV light can degrade and harden or fade the foil and surface material, which can negatively affect the stability of the furniture.

Hello iwandu,
I can really understand how frustrating it is to have such warping on nice furniture. For me, it was usually caused by moisture, but I only realized how important good air circulation is later on. The Malm dressers shouldn’t be placed directly against the wall because moisture can get trapped behind the furniture and cause the material to swell.
I agree completely, because in my case it was always a combination of moisture and lack of air.
Generally, it also helps to regularly open drawers and doors to prevent trapped heat or moisture. I’ve even managed to slightly straighten minor warping by very gently drying and pressing, but that’s definitely more of an emergency fix. 🙂
Best regards!

Interesting thread.
I would like to add to the recommendations mentioned so far, while also pointing out that the Malm series is simply an affordable furniture system that, with heavy use or improper handling, naturally shows wear faster than high-quality solid wood furniture.
The question here is whether the fronts were sufficiently supported and properly installed. Uneven loading can promote deformations. It would be advisable to review the assembly instructions regarding final installation and usage recommendations.
Furthermore, I recommend being cautious when placing the furniture against painted walls or near radiators, as temperature fluctuations in such environments can further stress the material.
In summary: Do not overload the product for its price range, optimize the environment, and ensure proper installation and use.

Hello everyone!
I like to keep things simple, but with a topic like this, you shouldn’t forget the basics: More air, less hassle.
Sure, the Malm isn’t a solid wood dresser made by a carpenter, but a little fresh air makes a big difference! I never place the dressers flush against the wall; there is always at least a 3 cm (1.2 inch) gap.
I also stuck small foam pads under the feet—they compensate for slight unevenness and ensure a better stance.
And hey, don’t keep the drawers closed for months, or they’ll really start to warp.
Cheers! 😉

Hello everyone,
I would like to take a moment to talk in more detail about moisture and care for Malm furniture. As mentioned before, the particleboard and the foil coating are the main factors when it comes to warping.
For cleaning, I recommend using a dry or only slightly damp microfiber cloth. Avoid harsh cleaning agents as they can damage the foil surface. After cleaning, make sure to thoroughly dry the surface.
It is also worth positioning the furniture so that no water from humidity or dripping condensation reaches the surface—be especially careful near windows during bad weather.
Regarding temperature: a constant 20 degrees Celsius (68°F) and a humidity level of 40-60% are considered optimal for this furniture. Humidifiers or dehumidifiers can help in extremely dry or damp rooms, if available.
I hope this provides you with a useful guide, especially for home care.
