Hello everyone, I am currently looking into storage boxes that fit perfectly into the IKEA Platsa systems. The Platsa modules are very flexible, but the internal dimensions can be tricky to work with when using small or medium-sized boxes. My question is whether there are specific storage solutions designed specifically to match the Platsa dimensions, or if you have any recommendations for third-party manufacturers or DIY options that integrate well without wasting too much space. Important criteria for me are stackability and stability, as I often store somewhat heavier items. Who has experience with this and perhaps concrete product recommendations or tips for efficient use of the modules?

Hello min36, I can recommend a structured approach to finding suitable boxes for PLATSA. The modules typically have internal dimensions of about 37cm (15 inches) in width and vary in height and depth. Therefore, you should first measure the internal dimensions precisely. Brands like Transparent Box often offer modular systems in matching sizes. It is worth checking the product descriptions, which sometimes directly recommend adaptations for PLATSA. Additionally, I suggest sturdy plastic boxes with smooth edges to avoid limiting flexible placement. Another option is custom-made wooden boxes or durable fabric boxes that can be reinforced with inserts if needed. In general, it is best if the boxes are not a tight fit, so they can be easily removed.

Interesting thread! However, I sometimes wonder if all the effort to have precise boxes is a form of self-imposed limitation. After all, the main advantage of PLATSA is its flexibility. So why force everything into fixed compartments? Maybe it’s more productive to develop a universal storage approach that goes beyond individual boxes and treats the entire interior as a flexible space. That said, for those who are sticklers for order, custom-fit boxes are probably like a second skin. I’m curious to hear how you manage the balance between organization and flexibility.

So why should everything be forced into rigid compartments?

That is a fair question, and I tend to see it the same way. However, my PLATSA system is primarily used for storing tools and accessories. In this case, a certain level of organization and, above all, secure and stable storage is crucial, so there is less room for loose stacking. The boxes should be compatible with the frame dimensions and internal heights to prevent shifting when pulled out. I would still like to maintain flexibility and preferably have boxes that are stackable. Can anyone offer tips on materials or manufacturers that have proven reliable for this purpose?

Hey min36, for the tool storage area, I can recommend stackable plastic boxes from a well-known German manufacturer that are commonly used in workshops. They are sturdy, have easy-to-grip edges, and often fit well in PLATSA. However, you usually need to add small spacers at the front or slightly modify the boxes to prevent them from getting stuck. A big advantage is that many models come with lids, which keeps dust out. And yes, they are definitely stackable if you ever need more space! If you are handy, you can even use Velcro straps or foam inserts to improve the fit.

if there are any special storage solutions that are designed to fit the exact dimensions of PLATSA

I tried experimenting a bit: unfortunately, IKEA itself offers very few boxes that fit PLATSA perfectly, but sometimes the Metod series can be repurposed. It always depends on the exact submodule. Otherwise, flexible fabric boxes work great because they can be slightly compressed if space is tight – and they can also be stacked easily. In general, I’d recommend paying attention to the material’s strength to support weight, otherwise they tend to sag quickly when modules are fully loaded. And if you like modular options, you can also use inserts and dividers within PLATSA to improve how the boxes fit. Definitely fun to work with!
