KARRUHello everyone, I am currently considering purchasing a piece of furniture from the IKEA Brimnes series but feel a bit uncertain due to the variety of models available. My question is: What are the differences between the various IKEA Brimnes models? I am especially interested in details such as dimensions, internal layout, material quality, functionalities, and color options. Differences between specific variants, such as beds, dressers, or cabinets, are also relevant to me. If anyone has detailed information or personal experience, I would be very grateful! If there are also differences in assembly or stability, please feel free to include those as well.

What are the differences between the various IKEA Brimnes models? The main differences are in size and functionality: some Brimnes beds have drawers, while others do not. Dressers vary in height and the number of drawers, as do wardrobes. Colors are mostly white, with some models in black-brown.

The main differences lie in the dimensions and functionality: some Brimnes beds have drawers, others do not. I would like to add to this, as there are some subtle but important details. The Brimnes series offers both beds with integrated storage and regular beds without. The models with drawers usually feature two or four drawers on the side, allowing for different storage capacities. Additionally, the height of the mattress platform varies between some models – this affects both comfort and appearance.
For dressers and wardrobes, the following criteria also differ:
- Overall width, height, and depth depending on the model
- Different arrangement and number of drawers or doors
- Some dressers also include carcasses with open compartments for more flexibility
- The back panels may vary, which impacts stability and assembly
In terms of materials, most parts are made of MDF panels with a melamine coating, but some components are lighter or partially veneered, depending on the model. The color options are usually white, black-brown (almost black), or white/high-gloss, with the latter being somewhat more delicate.
Is there a specific use case or room where the furniture will be placed? That might help provide more targeted recommendations.

Is there a specific use case or room where the furniture will be placed? Thanks for the detailed explanations so far, TUELBA. To answer your question: I am mainly looking for a Brimnes bed with storage for my bedroom, which is about 12 sqm (130 sq ft). The bed will be installed lengthwise against the wall, so the dimensions and height are especially important to avoid it looking too bulky. I plan to use the drawers mainly for bedding and occasional clothing. Preferred colors are white or dark brown, as offered in the series. Although dark brown might appear visually heavier in my small room. How sturdy are the drawer mechanisms in general? Are there significant differences between older and newer models?

JEREMIAH3821 Jun 2016 11:26I had a Brimnes bed in black-brown for four years, and I can tell you from experience: the drawers are actually sturdy, and the sliding mechanism is solid, but with excessive weight or poor assembly, the movement can become stiff. So definitely make sure the assembly is done correctly.
Regarding the sense of space, I can understand well that black-brown can feel a bit heavy in a small room. That was definitely the case for me, and I later replaced the bed with a white model. White generally feels lighter and more welcoming – but of course, that is a matter of personal taste.
Then the Brimnes drawers are actually ideal because they are quite large and fully extendable. If you’re looking for a practical solution that is often more affordable than other beds with storage, this series is a good choice.

The drawers are actually sturdy, and the sliding mechanism is solid I can only agree with that, but I want to break it down a bit more technically: The drawers in Brimnes beds are equipped with simple metal runners, usually combined with plastic rollers. Especially the newer models feature quality improvements, such as soft-close slides or reinforced carcass rails.
A few tips for assembly and maintenance:
- Always tighten screws firmly, especially those holding the carcass together
- Do not overload the drawer slides (avoid frequently placing very heavy items inside)
- If there are issues, a bit of silicone spray on the runners can help
The same applies to the dressers and cabinets: the load capacity is generally high, but especially with frequent opening and closing, you should ensure a clean assembly.

How stable are the drawer mechanisms in general? Are there big differences between older and newer models? Yes, the newer models have indeed been improved in detail. Some older versions were more prone to warped carcasses in high humidity, which negatively affected the drawer function. The new versions are somewhat more resistant and additionally have reinforced back panels.
