Hello everyone,

I recently purchased several IKEA Hemnes pieces, mainly dressers and nightstands, and I’m now facing the challenge of transporting them safely and as easily as possible. Since the furniture is quite solid and somewhat bulky, I’m wondering how to make the transport easier to save physical effort and avoid damage.

I’m not only thinking about moving them into a car or van but also about how to make carrying and especially loading them onto a vehicle less difficult. Do you have any tips or experience on the best way to disassemble the furniture or perhaps special tools that can help?

I look forward to your advice and practical suggestions on how to transport IKEA Hemnes furniture more easily—maybe even some tricks that aren’t widely known!

Hello Naukin,

your question is very well posed and covers important aspects. I personally transported several Hemnes pieces from IKEA a year ago and can offer the following tips:

- Completely disassemble the furniture wherever possible. Especially doors and drawers can often be removed, which reduces weight and prevents damage.
- Instead of placing the furniture directly on the floor, use boxes or blankets for protection.
- Use carrying straps wrapped around the furniture pieces. This helps distribute the load better and makes lifting easier.
- If you are transporting alone, it is worthwhile to place furniture wheels under flat bases or wooden boards so the pieces can be rolled instead of carried.

If you have a van, position the largest furniture pieces close to the driver’s door to make unloading easier. Also, pack cushions or blankets between the furniture so they don’t rub against each other.

I hope these tips are helpful. If you like, I can also provide more information about specific tools or packing techniques.

Disassemble Hemnes furniture, remove doors and drawers, then pack the individual parts carefully. This makes them easier to transport and less fragile.

Hey Naukin,

“Do you have any tips or experience on the best ways to disassemble furniture or perhaps use special tools?”

That reminds me of my last IKEA Tetris marathon! 😄 My secret tip: use moving blankets to protect the surfaces from scratches, and soft straps for carrying – they’re real lifesavers.

Also, you can often remove the drawers and equip the furniture with wheels (available as kits), or improvise with pallets if you have some experience.

With a combination of good preparation, some tools, and a sense of humor, every move becomes a success – and it won’t turn into a climbing challenge!

I completely agree, especially removing the drawers makes transport much easier. Additionally, I recommend collecting screws and small parts separately in bags and attaching them to the corresponding furniture pieces – this saves a lot of searching later.

If possible, also use tape to secure loose parts. A hand truck or trolley can be very helpful, especially in large apartments or when moving up and down stairs.

There are special furniture sliders designed to be placed under large pieces of furniture. Used together with lifting straps, this is the best way to move bulky Hemnes furniture with minimal effort.

Sturdy cardboard or bubble wrap also protects against scratches during transport. Hemnes pieces are durable, but it’s better to be safe than sorry.
