I have a somewhat specific question regarding the BILLY shelves from IKEA and their suitability for storing books. There are several different models and variations in the BILLY series, such as different heights, widths, or versions with and without glass doors. Which BILLY models are particularly well-suited if you want to store a large number of books, some of which are also larger formats? It would also be helpful to know if some variants are more stable or offer higher load capacity, or which ones are better for heavier books. Thanks for your detailed recommendations!

Basically, the standard BILLY bookcase with a footprint of 80 x 28 cm (31.5 x 11 inches) and a height of 202 cm (79.5 inches) is the most versatile option for books. It provides sufficient shelf space and fits into most rooms. For stability reasons, versions made of solid wood or with additional back panels are recommended, as they can better support heavy books.

The load capacity per shelf is on average about 15 kg (33 lbs). Those with very heavy collections should use additional support brackets or choose models with reinforced shelves. The version with a glass door is more suitable for decorative purposes since it is somewhat less durable and more expensive. For pure book storage, the classic BILLY without doors remains the best choice.

I would like to add that when choosing the right BILLY model, the room height and the planned arrangement are also important factors. The 202 cm (79.5 inches) high version is popular, but if you plan to store many very large books (e.g., art or architecture volumes), a wider bookshelf might be more practical, as the standard BILLY depth of 28 cm (11 inches) can be somewhat limited.

I can confirm this. Additionally, you can choose between models with 3 or 5 shelves. For heavier books, it is better to opt for fewer but more stable shelves. Anchoring the unit to the wall also increases safety and reduces stress on the shelves. Some BILLY models even allow shelf heights to be adjusted according to your needs, which is useful for books of very different sizes. My tip: always check in advance whether the chosen model has sufficient depth for your own books.

For many books, the original BILLY 80x28x202 cm (31.5x11x79.5 inches) is the best choice. Sturdy enough, customizable, and affordable. Glass doors are not very suitable for heavy books. Don’t forget the back panel and wall mounting. Done.
