Hello everyone, I have a somewhat specific question: How can I repair damaged drawers in my Ikea Besta system myself, without replacing the entire drawer? In my model, the side panels are partly swollen, and the drawer slides stick, making opening and closing much more difficult. I would like to know which tools and materials are useful, how to proceed without compromising stability, and if there are common weak points to watch out for. Does anyone have experience with this or maybe a step-by-step guide? Thanks in advance!

How can I repair damaged drawers on my Ikea BESTA system myself, without replacing the entire drawer? This is a very important question, as these drawers are quite intensively used daily. I had a similar issue last month with glued sides that had slightly come apart. In my opinion, patience and proper preparation are key. I found it helpful to completely disassemble the drawer, apply wood glue to the damaged areas, and check the drawer slides before reassembling everything. A tip: have all parts ready and even note the order of assembly – this saves frustration later.

I found it helpful to completely disassemble the drawer, treat the damaged areas with wood glue, and check the runnersThis makes sense in principle, but it’s important to differentiate here: the BESTA series partly uses particleboard that can swell when exposed to moisture. Wood glue alone may not hold if the material is significantly swollen. My advice: first assess the extent of the damage, and if necessary, use wood filler to create a stable base. Relying solely on glue can fail, which I consider quite critical. Has anyone checked the material density at the damaged spots?
Great topic! I also had a drawer emergency with my BESTA last week and managed to fix it! Simply removed all the runners, treated the side panels at the affected areas with wood glue and wood filler, clamped them in place, and let them dry overnight. The next day, installed new runners, put the drawer back in – works perfectly again! 🙂 So no worries, they can really be repaired well. Important: Don’t put too much load on the repaired side right away!

The BESTA series partly uses pressed chipboard panels that swell when exposed to moistureThat is correct. Ikea BESTA units use MDF or chipboard panels with a melamine coating, which react sensitively to water contact. Proper repair involves:
- Removing the damaged areas
- Sanding and smoothing the surface
- Using an epoxy wood filler with appropriate hardness
- Replacing or adjusting the guide rails (usually metal rails with rollers)
It is recommended to use clamps to hold parts in place during the curing time to prevent warping.
