Hello everyone, I have been experiencing an issue for some time now where the drawer of my Billy shelving unit is very difficult and stiff to pull out. The shelving unit itself is still relatively new, and I haven’t overloaded it or installed it incorrectly. I am mainly interested in which causes are typically responsible for a stiff-running BILLY drawer system—for example, whether it could be due to the runners themselves, alignment issues, or even material deformation. At the same time, I would like to know how to fix the problem using simple methods, without having to completely take the drawer apart or order replacement parts. Maybe someone here has had similar experiences or knows common weak points to check. I look forward to constructive tips and explanations!
I wonder: Was the drawer installed exactly according to the instructions? Often, deviations occur that can negatively affect the smoothness of operation.
Also: Are there any signs that the drawer slides might be unevenly loaded? For example, due to heavy or one-sided loading?

Simply pull it out, apply some silicone spray, and voilà, it runs like new again! Thanks for the tip! I will check if the plastic sliders on the drawer can be removed. Regarding the silicone spray: I assume it is safe for both plastic and wood and does not affect the materials?

Was the drawer aligned precisely according to the instructions during installation? Yes, I followed the instructions exactly, and everything seemed to fit very well. The drawer is moderately loaded with binders, no excessive weight. So, I just removed the drawer and checked the runners carefully. The issue was actually caused by slightly dirty plastic sliders that had almost no play left. After cleaning and applying some silicone spray, it now slides much more smoothly.
Thanks to everyone who shared their tips, that really helped!
One quick question: Should I perform this kind of maintenance regularly to ensure smooth operation over time? Or is this more of a one-time thing with BILLY shelves?
