Hello everyone,

I recently assembled an Ikea Besta furniture unit and had to remove some adhesive tapes, which left behind some unpleasant sticky residue. I’m particularly interested in how to remove this residue effectively and gently, without damaging the surface.

The furniture has a white, slightly glossy front, which is important for me to preserve since I don’t want to risk scratches or dull spots. Does anyone have experience or tips? I’m looking for something that reliably dissolves the adhesive residue but does not contain harsh chemicals that might harm the finish.

It would also be great if you could recommend a procedure—whether to start with mechanical removal first, which tools or products work best (e.g., special oils, solvents, household items, etc.), and what to watch out for.

Thanks for your help!

Gentle and effective – two requirements that often conflict. To be honest, many common products are either too harsh or ineffective. My somewhat provocative opinion: if you want to remove adhesive residues from high-gloss surfaces, you need to be a bit experimental. It’s better to start with mild substances like oil (baby oil or olive oil). This often loosens the adhesive without damaging the surface.

If you’re not wearing full chemical protection gear, avoiding harsh chemicals usually means slow scrubbing, which can also leave marks. I rely on natural oils or heat – for example, gently warm the adhesive with a hairdryer, then remove it carefully. Try this first before resorting to acetone or similar solvents.

Mechanically, be as careful as possible – use a credit card or plastic scraper, not metal.

In general: always test on a hidden spot first!

Heat + oil is the best combination. Simply direct a hair dryer on medium setting at the adhesive residue, then rub in some olive oil. After a few minutes, you can easily wipe off the adhesive residue.

Carefully lift the residue with a plastic scraper. Avoid using strong solvents if the surface is important to you.

Hello Nasolo,

I am quite familiar with the issue of adhesive residues on IKEA BESTA furniture, as I have assembled several pieces from this series myself. When removing glue residues, it is important to proceed gently but purposefully to avoid damaging the surface.

These steps have worked well for me:

- Heating: As suggested, a hairdryer can help soften the adhesive residue. Be careful not to apply heat to the same spot for too long to prevent discoloration.

- Using oil: A natural, oily substance like olive oil, baby oil, or even special silicone oil can help dissolve the glue. Simply apply it with a soft cloth and let it sit.

- Mechanical assistance: After letting it soak, you can carefully remove the softened residue with a soft plastic spatula or an old credit card. Avoid using sharp metal tools to prevent scratches.

- Cleaning: Finally, you can clean the area with some mild dish soap and water, then polish with a dry, soft cloth.

I especially recommend avoiding solvents like acetone or nail polish remover, as they can damage and dull the white BESTA surfaces.

If you’re unsure, you can test the method on an inconspicuous spot first. This method has always worked well for me—the furniture remained looking like new. If you can describe the specific type of adhesive residue (for example, the kind of tape), I might be able to offer more targeted advice.

Good luck!
