Hello everyone, I am planning to assemble an IKEA Platsa cabinet myself and currently have questions about how to properly attach the back panel and what the recommended procedure is.

I understand that the back panel not only provides stability but also plays a major role in preventing twisting.

My specific questions are:
- How is the back panel typically fixed in place?
- Are there different methods depending on whether the cabinet is installed against a wall or freestanding?
- What screws or fasteners are optimal?
- Should the back panel be nailed into the carcass edges, or are there better methods?

It would also be helpful to know what to watch out for to ensure the back panel fits correctly and the cabinet remains durable and stable over time.

Thanks in advance for the advice!

The back panel of PLATSA is usually attached with small nails or screws, which IKEA also provides. It is important that the back panel fits completely between the cabinet frame rails.

For freestanding cabinets, it is recommended to screw the back panel as well to increase stability. For wall mounting, nails are usually sufficient.

I am aware that the back panel not only provides stability but also significantly contributes to the torsional rigidity.

That is correct, as the back panel acts like a diagonal brace and prevents the carcass from twisting.

It is advisable to fit the thin chipboard evenly into the grooves on all sides. Then, the MDF back panels should be secured using the included screws or slender nails.

If the cabinet is to stand freely, I recommend attaching additional corner braces inside the carcass to improve load-bearing capacity.

For wall mounting, the back panel should always lie flat against the wall to secure the cabinet from the rear.

Be careful not to hammer the back panel too forcefully, as it may chip or warp. Gentle pressure to secure it is sufficient.

It is recommended to evenly insert the thin particle board into the designated grooves on all sides.

This is a crucial point because if the back panel does not fit neatly into the carcass edges, the stability will be significantly affected.

Furthermore, nails or screws should not be placed too close together to prevent the material from splitting. Typically, a fastening point every 10-15 cm (4-6 inches) is sufficient.

If the cabinet will be fully loaded or is intended to carry heavier weights, it may be advisable to add additional braces or carcass elements behind the back panel.

Using a rubber mallet to gently tap the back panel into place or securing it with small screw hooks can also help protect the material while ensuring a firm hold.
