Good morning everyone, a few days ago I assembled a Billy shelf from IKEA and properly secured it to the wall as described in the instructions. However, I notice that the shelf still wobbles when leaned on or even with slight contact. The screws are tight, nothing is loose, and the wall seems solid enough. My question is: what could be the reasons for a Billy shelf to wobble despite proper and careful wall mounting? Are there any known weak points that might be overlooked during assembly or fastening? I look forward to your experiences and advice!

In such cases, it is important to check whether the mounting points on the wall are actually anchored to a solid substrate. For drywall partitions, fastening to the gypsum boards alone is often not sufficient, and special anchors or additional fixing into the studs behind are required.

Furthermore, slight wobbling can be caused by an uneven floor level or a shelf board that does not rest completely flat, which prevents the furniture from standing stable. Please also check whether the full-height connecting pieces on the shelf itself are tightened properly.

I agree with that, but I wonder: How exactly was the shelf mounted? Only at the top with two screws? The standard mounting for BILLY usually includes two brackets at the top on the back, which is a relatively small surface area.

Your description is a bit vague. Maybe this fastening is not enough to prevent lateral movement. Who knows if there might also be a slight tilt in the floor that increases the wobbling. Have you tried whether additional brackets or a multipoint mounting system could help?

Thanks for following up. I screwed the shelf to the wall in two places at the top, using the original IKEA dowels and screws as per the instructions. The floor is completely level, all the feet are firmly in contact, and I checked with a spirit level that the shelf is straight. I wonder if the material itself – the back panel or the construction – might have some play that causes wobbling under load. I’ve seen this with other furniture, but it seems unusual for BILLY.

I haven’t added any wider fixings or stabilizers. What do you think, would that be advisable, or am I perhaps overdoing it?

This is indeed an important point. The thin hardboard back panel of BILLY is primarily designed for stability, but it is not completely rigid under shear or tension loads. Sometimes it is not sufficient to fully prevent all lateral movements, especially since it is usually only fastened at the top.

One common solution recommended is to additionally secure the shelf to the wall at the bottom, if possible. Adding braces or placing a support underneath the shelf can also help if the feet are slightly uneven on the floor.

Furthermore, screws within the shelf unit itself, which hold the shelf together, can be loose and cause movement. Check all screw connections on the furniture.

Hey, I can totally relate! I also had a BILLY shelf that was slightly wobbly at first, even though I tightened all the screws perfectly. 🙂

What helped me was adding small metal brackets between the shelf and the wall at the lower back – that really makes a big difference for stability! And another tip: imagine holding the shelf with a second person while you screw it in. That definitely provides better support and reduces wobbling.

Keep at it, with a bit of experimenting you'll definitely get it fixed. Good luck!! 🙂
