Hello everyone,

I recently replaced the back panel of my Kallax shelf because the original was damaged, and I used a slightly thicker HDF board instead. Unfortunately, the doors that previously fit perfectly no longer close properly. They do not align flush or sometimes cannot be fully closed.

My question is: Why don’t the doors fit properly after replacing the back panel on the Kallax shelf? Are there specific tolerances or installation dimensions to consider when replacing the back panel?

I checked the exact measurements of the new back panel; it is only about 2 mm (0.08 inches) thicker than the original, but that seems to be enough to cause issues with the doors. Does anyone have experience or advice on why this might be?

Therefore, it is not just the difference in the thickness of the back panel, but also how this changes the distance between the door frame and the side panels. I would also question whether the door hinges are specifically designed for the distance to the back panel—which they probably are.

Ideally, you would either replace the back panel with one that matches the original dimensions exactly or, if using thicker material, simultaneously adjust the door hinges or the door itself. Without making such adjustments, the doors will no longer fit as precisely as intended.

That can actually make a difference. In Kallax units, the components are manufactured quite precisely. The back panel plays a key role in how the individual parts are held together and also how the doors fit against the side panels.

If the back panel is too thick, the internal dimensions of the shelf become slightly smaller. Doors designed for the original measurements may then not close flush. In such cases, adjusting the door hinges, if possible, usually helps, or bringing the back panel to the original thickness.

If possible, I also recommend checking the door hinges—especially in Kallax units, these are clip-on systems that generally work only for a specific panel thickness. So 2 mm (0.08 inches) can actually be “too much,” causing the doors to stick or not close completely.

I would like to add that the stability of the back panel also plays an important role.

A thicker or stiffer back panel usually causes the entire cabinet to sit slightly differently, as the back panel is responsible for the frame’s stability. Small deviations of just a few millimeters can result from twisting or reinforcement, which in turn affect the fit of the doors.

It is possible that the cabinet has warped slightly due to a thicker back panel. Because of this warped shape, the doors no longer fit properly.

My tip: If possible, first mount the back panel temporarily and check whether the cabinet or the side panels are still truly square. This is the only way to achieve a perfect result. If the back panel needs to be modified, make sure that no additional stresses are applied to the frame.

An increase of 2 mm in the back panel thickness reduces the interior space. Door hinges are designed for the original thickness. Either use matching hinges or make the back panel thinner. Done.

I fully agree with that. The back panel significantly affects the dimensional chain of the Kallax shelving unit. While 2 mm (0.08 inches) may seem minor at first glance, with the tight fit of the doors, it quickly causes collisions.

Furthermore, the doors also provide slight support, which is why precisely defined gap dimensions and flush finishes are important.

My recommendation: either use the back panel at the original thickness or mechanically adjust the doors (e.g., use hinges with greater offset or cut the doors). Under no circumstances should the stability of the back panel be overestimated in favor of material thickness if it leads to fitting problems.
