Hello everyone,
I have several Malm furniture pieces from IKEA, specifically dressers and nightstands, all with a matte finish. Unfortunately, there are some stubborn stains that won’t come off with regular cleaning using a damp cloth. These include dried coffee, pen marks, and some grease stains from skin contact.
It’s important to me not to damage the material or ruin the matte effect—so no heavy sanding or harsh solvents.
Does anyone know an effective and gentle method to remove such stubborn stains without harming the surface? Practical tips with proven products or techniques would be much appreciated. I look forward to your experiences and recommendations!

Hello SITUSAU,
First of all, your concern about the sensitive surface is completely justified. Malm furniture is made from coated wood, often with a melamine or foil finish that appears matte but can easily become dull or stained if treated incorrectly.
Step 1: Dry Cleaning
Start by gently using an eraser (the typical white school or household eraser) on the stain.
Step 2: Gentle Cleaning
Use lukewarm water and a microfiber cloth. Avoid rubbing; instead, dab gently.
Step 3: Specific Stain Removal
For spots like coffee, you can carefully use a mild dish soap solution with water. Apply a small amount to the cloth, not directly on the furniture.
Step 4: For Marker or Pen Stains
Alcohol-based products like isopropanol can help but always test first in an inconspicuous area.
Step 5: Grease Stains
Dish soap has worked well for me here as well—dab gently several times.
Important: Do not scrub during treatment; it’s better to dab gently multiple times and wipe dry occasionally.
In summary, I would recommend gentle mechanical cleaning (eraser), mild soapy water, careful use of isopropanol, and gentle dabbing. If you are unsure about any cleaning agent, test it first on a hidden spot!
If you like, I can also provide more precise mixing ratios or suggest additional home remedies.

For coffee or grease stains, warm soapy water and a soft cloth work well.Exactly, that sums it up. I would like to add that the "soft cloth" should ideally be a microfiber cloth, as it cleans particularly gently.

I usually remove pen marks with 60% isopropyl alcohol, then immediately wipe with water.Important: Always test first to make sure this does not cause discoloration or dulling effects.
As a tip: For especially stubborn spots, you can carefully use a small amount of toothpaste (without abrasive particles) as a mild abrasive, but please proceed very cautiously and do not overdo it—better to try gently several times.
For users, it is always best to use cleaning agents sparingly and in small amounts to avoid damaging the surface.
From a factual perspective, the following points apply to Malm surfaces:
1. Malm is coated with a plastic finish (usually melamine resin), which protects the surface from moisture but is sensitive to mechanical impact and chemical solvents.
2. Water-based cleaning agents and gentle rubbing with soft cloths are safe, whereas aggressive cleaners or abrasive materials are not.
3. Removing stains such as coffee, grease, or marker requires a graduated approach: start with mild cleaning, then carefully apply a small amount of alcohol (isopropanol, ethanol) tested first in an inconspicuous area.
4. Acetone or chlorine-based cleaners should be avoided, as they can damage the surface coating.
5. After cleaning, always wipe with clean water and dry to prevent residue buildup.
These guidelines are based on material data and recommendations from IKEA itself regarding care.

You should avoid acetone or chlorine-based cleaners, as they can damage the surface coating.Exactly, that’s really important! And to keep things a bit lighter: fortunately, there are good alternatives that can remove stains without using harsh chemicals. 🙂
For example, I sometimes use a little trick for coffee and grease stains: sprinkle cornstarch on the grease stain, let it sit for a few minutes, then remove it with a microfiber cloth. This works well to absorb the grease.
For marker pen stains, I found that a cotton pad with a bit of isopropanol-based nail polish remover works well, but please use it very briefly and wipe it off thoroughly afterward.
And always keep in mind: less is more, don’t panic while cleaning, and it’s better to clean gently several times rather than scrubbing too hard once. 😉
