Hello everyone, I plan to paint my IKEA Metod kitchen cabinets myself to make them individually lighter and more modern. However, I am unsure about the best approach since the cabinets are made from a combination of melamine-coated panels and edges with plastic.

My main questions are:
- What type of paint is best suited for these surfaces to ensure good adhesion and durability?
- How should I prepare the surfaces (sanding, cleaning, priming?) without damaging the cabinets?
- Are there any special techniques or tools needed for an even finish?
- How do I care for the painted kitchen fronts on a daily basis to protect the paint and keep it looking good for a long time?

I am deliberately not looking for an expensive professional treatment but rather practical advice from people who have done this before or have good knowledge. Thanks in advance for all tips and experiences!

You should use water-based acrylic or synthetic resin paints that are specifically designed for plastics. However, I recommend applying a high-quality primer beforehand; otherwise, the paint won’t last long.

This is the key point: The melamine-coated furniture is very smooth and hardly absorbent. Light sanding with very fine sandpaper (e.g., grit 220 to 320) is usually enough to improve adhesion, but it must be done carefully. Clean beforehand with alcohol to remove all grease.

I recommend using a small paint roller or a spray gun, as brush marks tend to stand out on such surfaces. Allow sufficient drying times and apply thin layers to prevent drips.

Avoid abrasive cleaning agents; it’s best to use a damp microfiber cloth with mild dish soap. Remove dust and crumbs immediately to prevent scratches.

I hope this helps you move forward.

Lightly sand the melamine fronts, then apply a primer. Use acrylic or synthetic resin paint for the lacquer. Spraying is best to avoid streaks. Afterwards, maintain carefully with a mild cleaner.

Wow, such an exciting topic! I painted my Metod fronts myself, and it was really fun—the result turned out great! 😊

The key is really thorough cleaning and sanding of the surface. Always sand gently, not too rough, otherwise you’ll get unwanted scratches. I applied several very thin layers with a spray, letting each one dry completely. Patience pays off!

For maintenance, I always use a soft cloth with lukewarm water and a drop of dish soap. Be careful with abrasive cleaners or too much moisture, as these can damage the paint.

So: stick with it, it’s definitely worth it to give your kitchen a cool new look! Good luck!! 🌟

This is exactly the critical point, as sanding the plastic edge too hard can damage the surface.

Here is another tip: If you are unsure, test the paint and primer on a small, inconspicuous area or a sample piece before working on the entire front.

Additionally, some users report that special adhesion promoters (primers for plastic) significantly improve durability. This is definitely worth considering if you want the paint job to last in the long term.
