Hello everyone, I recently bought some IKEA Malm furniture and would like to paint it myself to give it a customized look. However, I’m unsure about the best approach to achieve a good and durable result.

Specifically, I’m interested in learning: What preparations are necessary to properly prepare the surface for painting? Which types of paint are best suited for the MDF surface of the Malm furniture? And are there any special techniques or tools I should use to achieve a smooth and even finish without unsightly brush marks?

I have some DIY experience but am relatively new to painting furniture. I would really appreciate any tips on cleaning, sanding, priming, and of course the paint itself. Thanks in advance for your help!

Good question, preparation is really essential when painting Malm furniture! The surface is usually melamine-coated, which means you should start by sanding it well so that the paint will adhere properly. It’s best to use fine sandpaper, around grit 180 to 220. After sanding, it’s important to thoroughly remove the dust, ideally with a damp cloth or a vacuum cleaner.

You have two options here: Water-based acrylic paint is great because it has low odor and dries quickly, or you can use enamel paint, which is more durable but has a stronger smell and takes longer to dry. For home use and beginners, I recommend acrylic paint, applied with a high-quality brush or a small paint roller.

Make sure to apply the paint in thin layers and allow each coat to dry thoroughly before applying the next one to achieve the best finish. Always paint in the direction of the grain! Good luck, it will definitely turn out great 🙂

Sand the Malm furniture completely first. Then apply a primer. Use acrylic or synthetic resin paint. Apply with a foam roller, using a brush for the corners. Allow each layer to dry thoroughly, then if necessary, lightly sand between coats.

Great that you’re tackling this yourself! 🙂 I refinished my Malm dresser a few months ago and can only recommend applying the paint in thin layers. Malm is MDF with a melamine coating, so not all paint adheres immediately. A great tip is to use a fine foam roller instead of a brush; it distributes the paint much more evenly and helps avoid brush marks.

Also, I primed the furniture with a special adhesion primer before painting. It acts as a bonding agent between the smooth surface and the paint. You can find it at hardware stores, it’s inexpensive, and it makes a huge difference.

After sanding, I wiped the surface with a well-wrung cloth to remove all the dust that would otherwise get trapped in the paint. This way, the finish shines nicely and becomes more durable.

Good luck with your DIY project!

Exactly! I did the same and it was so much easier. Another tip from me: after painting, let the furniture dry in a dust-free area, otherwise annoying dirt will settle on the still-wet paint!

And no matter how much you read, be patient between coats. My first attempt had too little drying time, which caused bubbles and unevenness. So it’s better to invest a bit more time and take it easy – it’s worth it, I promise!

Looking forward to seeing your results!

To summarize: thoroughly sand the surface area, remove all dust properly, then apply a special primer, followed by thin layers of paint, allowing each layer to dry completely.

Exactly, and be sure to use fine-grit sandpaper when sanding, otherwise you might end up with marks and unevenness.

Don’t worry, with a bit of patience it will turn out great 🙂 If you want, you can also try painting a small, inconspicuous section first to get a feel for the paint and technique.
