Hello everyone,

I am currently facing the task of assembling several Ikea Hemnes furniture pieces and would like to better understand their durability. Therefore, my question to the community is: What assembly tips have worked well for you to ensure that Hemnes furniture remains as stable and long-lasting as possible after assembly? I am especially interested in aspects such as tightening the screws, the correct order of assembly, possible additional fasteners, or maintenance tips that help prevent the furniture from wobbling, creaking, or becoming damaged over time.

Since Hemnes is known for being made of solid wood with a relatively simple construction design, I am particularly curious whether there are specific materials or tools you would recommend to enhance stability.

Thank you in advance for your experience and advice!

Wouldn’t it be more effective to follow the recommended steps in the supplied instructions more closely and improvise less?

The instructions are certainly the foundation. However, Ikea furniture is often designed for self-assembly with minimal tools and materials, which limits its durability.

The recommendations—such as wood glue or wall mounting—are not improvisations but proven measures to reduce mechanical stress and increase stability.

A piece of solid wood furniture like Hemnes can definitely benefit from this extra care.

I find the discussion here a bit too conservative. Sure, Hemnes is solid and sturdy, but it’s still from Ikea. The construction itself has certain weaknesses.

Why not simply avoid bulky, cheap plug-in fittings and instead use professional furniture hardware? In my view, that’s the only way to really get long-lasting furniture.

The instructions are good enough for the average consumer, but not for everyone who truly wants something durable. Ikea sells mass-produced goods, not high-end furniture.

Anyone seriously dealing with this subject should move away from Ikea assembly instructions and set their own standards.

That’s an interesting point. For those with some DIY experience, alternative fittings or stronger screws can definitely make sense.

However, it is always important to consider the wood structure—using fittings that are too large or aggressive can cause long-term damage to the material.

For the average user, the most important thing is to work precisely and carefully with the original parts to ensure the furniture is stable.

Hi everyone!

This all sounds quite technical – but Hemnes isn’t rocket science! 😄

My little kitchen psychology on the topic: Assembling the furniture calmly and patiently, without struggling with the screws, makes it last much longer for me. Take it easy, tighten the screws by hand first, and don’t drive them in with the anger of a rock concert – everything will hold better that way.

And very important: Always secure the furniture to the wall, whether with or without additional brackets. Safety comes first, and if the cabinet ever tips over, no one gets upset!

Oh, and before I forget – put small felt pads under the feet to protect the floor, so you don’t have to constantly move everything around!

Okay, enough jokes – that’s my two cents! 😉

Summary of my experiences:

- First tighten screws by hand, then fully tighten them after assembly is complete.
- Always secure furniture to the wall.
- Insert wooden dowels correctly, possibly securing them with a bit of wood glue.
- Always fasten back panels properly, as they are important for stability.
- Use a rubber mallet to gently assemble components.

This is usually enough to make Hemnes stable and durable.
