Teotadde362 Jun 2020 09:12Hello everyone,
I am currently planning a move and have been considering taking my IKEA PAX wardrobe systems with me. Since they are modular, I’m wondering how easy or difficult it is to disassemble and take them apart. Specifically, I’m interested in whether the PAX wardrobes – especially the larger versions with multiple units and additional features like doors, shelves, or drawers – can be dismantled completely without much effort.
How has your experience been? Does it usually go smoothly, or are there certain weak points to watch out for? What tools would be best to use, and how much effort does the whole process require? I’d prefer to avoid any damage to the cabinet parts or back panels that would make reusing them impossible.
I would really appreciate any useful experiences or tips!

Hello @Teotadde36,
to answer your question about easily disassembling IKEA PAX wardrobes, here is a short step-by-step guide:
- Basically, PAX wardrobes are designed to be assembled and disassembled multiple times. The individual parts are connected with only a few screws and dowels.
- It’s best to start by removing all doors, drawers, and shelves – this makes handling the large parts easier.
- To remove these, you’ll need a cordless drill or at least a good Phillips screwdriver. A rubber mallet can also help to gently loosen parts.
- The back panel is usually attached with small nails. These should be carefully pried off using a crowbar or screwdriver to minimize damage.
- Be careful with the cabinet connectors (these cam locks or corner brackets), as they can break if handled improperly. It’s better to work slowly and carefully here.
In summary: If you proceed carefully, you can almost completely take apart a PAX wardrobe and reuse it during reassembly.
Tip: Back panels and door fittings are delicate – if possible, take photos of their attachment beforehand if you have any doubts.
Hope this helps!

Basically, the PAX wardrobes are well designed to be assembled and disassembled multiple times. That's correct. Just remove the doors and shelves, loosen the screws – done.
I took apart my PAX wardrobes last year because I moved. I was a bit nervous about something breaking in the process.
That concern is understandable. My advice: be patient and carefully pry off the back panel using a flat lever. It worked for me, but it helps to work with someone else since larger parts are easier to handle and put less stress on the wood.
If you have some time after disassembly, make sure to sort all the screws neatly and note where they belong. This makes reassembly much easier.

For additional information:
- The PAX wardrobes are made from MDF boards, which are sturdy but can splinter if handled roughly. Special care should be taken with the back panels, which are often made from thinner hardboard.
- Screws and wall plugs can be reused multiple times but should not be damaged or overtightened during disassembly.
- A good cordless screwdriver with adjustable torque helps prevent stripping the screw holes.
If you keep these points in mind, you can disassemble and reassemble the wardrobes without major issues. The effort is roughly 1 to 2 hours per wardrobe, depending on size and accessories.
Finally, a note: Disassembling integrated lighting or electrical components requires extra caution.

One more question for everyone: Is there usually a disassembly manual from the manufacturer, or do you basically have to figure it out yourself? I have the assembly instructions here, but they focus more on building than on taking apart.
If anyone in this forum has experience and a disassembly guide for PAX wardrobes, that would be very helpful.
