Hello everyone,
I am planning to set up a Billy bookcase from IKEA in my home office, but I have no possibility or desire to assemble the shelves using screws. My question is therefore: How can Billy bookcases be assembled without screws in a way that remains stable and does not compromise safety? So far, I have only seen the classic assembly with wall plugs and screws, but perhaps there are alternative solutions such as clamping techniques, adhesives, or similar aids. What experiences have you had with these methods? Are there special products or tricks to join or stabilize the components without screwing? I would greatly appreciate your practical tips and advice – including any information on the load-bearing capacity of the shelf afterward. Thank you in advance!

Hello Loduta, mounting a Billy shelf without screws is only practical to a limited extent, but it is possible. You can use strong mounting adhesives, attach the shelf parts with brackets at the same time, and possibly secure them additionally with furniture clamps. Note: Load-bearing capacity is limited.

A screwless assembly of a Billy bookcase only makes limited senseThat’s exactly right. The design of Billy bookcases relies on point connections using screws; without them, the furniture loses stability and safety.Alternatives like construction adhesive can join the parts but are more suitable for less stressed areas or purely decorative shelves. For a truly load-bearing and secure solution, specialized furniture gluing methods are recommended, although these usually are not sufficient without additional fastening elements.

Are there any special products or tricks to assemble the components without screws? There are so-called snap connectors or clamp fittings, for example, but these are not designed for Billy bookcases and typically require modifications. In practice, screwing is the safest and most durable method.Joshbe schrieb:
The construction of Billy shelves is designed for point connections using screwsAbsolutely right. Still, I think with some creativity you can create screwless solutions—such as using strong mounting straps or stainless steel tension systems designed for shelves. Of course, it’s not 100% IKEA-compliant, but if you want to customize your Billy a bit, you can experiment with seals, rubber buffers, and clamping mechanisms.
Also: double-sided professional-grade adhesive tape combined with wood glue can help secure individual boards. I would just be careful not to have to move the shelf around constantly 😉
Sometimes these “direct adhesive” methods are very practical to hold shelf parts together visually without large holes or visible screws. However, you have to be realistic about the load capacity—books shouldn’t be too heavy in this case.
If anyone has experience with tension systems, feel free to share! 🙂
