Hello everyone,
I am currently considering whether it makes sense to replace the standard doors on a KALLAX shelving unit with adhesive doors. My goal is to achieve a more modern and personalized look while avoiding drilling holes or installing difficult-to-mount hinges.
Has anyone had experience with adhesive doors that are directly applied to the KALLAX fronts? How are they in terms of durability, appearance, and functionality?
I am especially interested in whether the adhesive doors hold up over time, how easily they can be removed if needed, and whether there are any issues with the shelves, for example due to flexible adhesive strips or warping of the doors.
Looking forward to your opinions and experiences!

Thanks for the question, I’m currently thinking about this as well! I find the idea of adhesive doors interesting because they offer a simple solution without the need for extensive tools, especially if you’re renting or don’t have much experience with DIY.
However, I’ve heard that some people have had issues when the adhesive strips don’t hold perfectly or if you want to remove the doors during renovations.
I’m also wondering if this option is really stable enough so that the doors won’t eventually hang crooked or come loose.

My question: Has anyone here had experience with adhesive doors that are directly attached to the KALLAX front? This trend with adhesive doors seems more like a makeshift solution for people who are afraid of drilling or concerned about stability. Why not just use real doors? Even installing simple hinges isn’t that complicated.
Adhesive doors often feel more like a gimmick; I can’t imagine they last long. The look is usually quite nice, but the practicality is questionable. But of course, everyone to their own.

Some simply don’t want to make holes in furniture or walls, especially if they spend little time at home or like to change things quickly.
I’m also interested in how well adhesive doors hold up under stress when the shelf is moved frequently or the doors are opened and closed often.
I once had a similar idea for my KALLAX and instead tried using thin magnetic sheets that I attached to the front—kind of like adhesive doors, but using magnetic force.
It was super easy, held up well, and you could remove or replace the sheets at any time without any trouble.
Maybe this could be an alternative for you? Adhesive doors sound cool in general, but I guess you might lose some flexibility and the DIY fun if everything is just glued on. 🙂
