Hello everyone,

I recently purchased some Malm furniture from Ikea, which will be placed in a room with carpet flooring. To ensure they stand firmly on the carpet and do not slip or even tip over, I am wondering about practical and effective options for securing or stabilizing them.

Are there specific brackets, anti-slip pads, or fastening methods that have proven reliable for Malm furniture, especially if you want to avoid drilling or screwing permanently?

Maybe someone here knows a clever solution to keep the furniture steady and prevent it from moving on the carpet without damaging the carpet itself?

I look forward to your tips and experiences!

Hello,

When placing Malm furniture on carpet, it is especially important to distribute the weight as evenly as possible and to take measures to prevent slipping. Due to the soft surface, the furniture can easily tip if only the feet are resting on it.

A proven method is to use furniture glides with rubber coating designed for carpets. Additionally, I recommend placing anti-slip mats under the furniture legs. These are thin, reduce movement, and protect the carpet.

If drilling or using wall plugs is not an option, clamp brackets for wall mounting also provide secure support. This prevents tipping without having to fix anything to the floor.

If the carpet is very thick, it can also help to place a thin board made of wood or plastic under the furniture to better distribute the pressure and increase stability.

I think this point is important to emphasize because many people worry about damaging the carpet or the wall. I was hesitant at first, but with the clamp holders, which can be discreetly placed behind the furniture, it feels stable and secure.

I was also reluctant to make large holes since the living space is rented. This advice helped me a lot, so maybe it will help you too.

Another aspect not to be underestimated is regularly checking whether the carpet is being excessively stressed in one spot due to the weight—especially with thick, soft carpets. I solved this myself by using a thin plastic sheet, as flo-Theres suggested. 🙂

Place non-slip pads under the furniture feet to prevent slipping.
For added stability: secure furniture with wall brackets.
Avoid placing very heavy furniture entirely on carpet; use thin heavy-duty boards to help.

Yes, those are exactly the basic principles, but I would add that choosing the right pads for the carpet type is crucial. A smooth silicone pad can work well on low-pile carpets, while for higher pile carpets, a slightly compressible base is better to prevent the furniture from wobbling.

To address this specifically for Malm: Malm dressers are quite light and tend to tip over, especially when heavily loaded. Clamp brackets that attach to the top of the furniture and wedge against the wall are useful because they don’t necessarily require screwing, instead providing support through a clamping mechanism (e.g., anti-tip kits from Ikea). Alternatively, stabilization can be achieved by using non-slip mats combined with extra weight at the bottom to lower the center of gravity.

Protecting the carpet works well by placing thin wooden boards or sturdy cardboard under the furniture legs to prevent sinking and at the same time increase stability.
