Hello everyone,

I am currently facing the challenge of making the best use of a rather small niche in my bedroom. I am considering the IKEA Pax system because it is modular and offers some customization options. My specific question is: Are there any practical Pax solutions for very small or narrow niches that can be used without having to resort to custom-made furniture from a carpenter?

The niche is about 100 cm wide and just under 60 cm deep (39 inches wide and 24 inches deep) – less than a standard Pax wardrobe. I would like to know if anyone has experience with fitting Pax units into such small spaces, for example, whether it makes sense to combine narrower widths or intermediate shelves, or if there are any module-specific tips to be aware of.

I am interested in practical advice: which combinations work, whether additional components like interior pulls or Pax Komplement accessories are recommended, and what limitations there might be.

Thanks in advance for your tips and experiences!

Good morning,

Basically, the IKEA PAX series is modular and offers various widths, heights, and depths. For small niches like yours (100 cm wide, 60 cm deep (39 inches by 24 inches)), the standard widths available are 50 cm and 100 cm, with the 100 cm wardrobe exactly fitting the niche width.

Here are some points I can recommend:

- Combining two 50 cm (20 inches) wardrobes: This is usually more flexible than a single large 100 cm (39 inches) wardrobe because you can more easily mix different interior fittings.
- The standard depth of the PAX wardrobe frames is usually 58 cm (23 inches), which matches your niche depth.
- Interior pull-outs and drawers come in various widths, allowing for efficient use of storage space.
- For very narrow spots, IKEA also offers PAX Komplement shelves that can be installed between the wardrobe frames.

One challenge, however, is that PAX systems cannot be custom-cut—so if your niche is only 98 cm wide, it will be tight since the wardrobes come only in fixed widths.

In summary, I would say that using a combination of 50 cm (20 inches) widths, tailored to the niche height, is quite feasible for making use of small spaces but requires precise measurements and possibly some compromises on the interior fittings.

This is because IKEA offers practical modular systems that are very convenient when they fit, but sometimes they don’t provide a perfect fit for really awkward corners.

For your 100 cm (39 inches) wide niche, you can use the 100-cm (39-inch) PAX unit – so it fits if you have the exact width. If the space is a bit narrower, you can vary by using the 50-cm (20-inch) wardrobes and basically do a bit of “Lego building.”

My tip: Also check out the interior organization options – drawers can be added quite flexibly, and the clothes rails come in different lengths. That way, it’s fun to keep everything neatly stored 🧦👔.

And hey: In the worst case, a custom-made solution might be needed, but for almost every other niche, there are PAX hacks! Good luck with your planning.

That is already quite a tight space for PAX, but definitely doable.

Here is a detailed guide and some tips for your project:

- The standard PAX wardrobe frame usually has a depth of 58 cm (23 inches), which fits well with your niche depth of 60 cm (24 inches). The width, however, comes in fixed sizes (50 or 100 cm). You can either choose a single 100 cm (39 inches) wide wardrobe or place two 50 cm (20 inches) wardrobes side by side.

- If your niche is exactly 100 cm (39 inches) wide, a 100 cm (39 inches) wide wardrobe will be the best fit.

- Regarding the interior fittings: make use of as many PAX KOMPLEMENT modular systems as possible to optimize the interior space. These include adjustable clothes rails, different drawer options, or raised shelves for shoes or boxes.

- Assembly: be sure to align the wardrobes precisely, since in small niches every millimeter counts and otherwise the doors may not close properly.

- Avoid modifying or cutting parts yourself, as this can void the warranty and cause the system to no longer function properly.

- Extra tip: if the niche is very deep, you might consider omitting the back panel and building an open-back wardrobe; this can slightly reduce the overall wardrobe depth.

In summary, IKEA PAX does offer solutions for small niches, but planning must be done carefully with close attention to the system dimensions and options. The interior fittings are very flexible, allowing for efficient storage management with the shelf inserts.

If you provide the exact niche dimensions and what you want to store, I can offer more specific recommendations.
