Are there IKEA PLATSA variants with sliding doors?

I am currently planning to furnish a room using IKEA storage solutions, specifically the PLATSA system. However, I am having trouble finding out whether PLATSA offers any versions that come standard with sliding doors or if sliding doors are available as official add-ons.

Since I have limited space for door swing clearance and a sliding door would fit better here, I am especially interested if anyone has experience or specific information on how flexible PLATSA is regarding door types.

I am particularly interested in—if available—dimensions, material options, experiences with handling and stability of sliding doors in the PLATSA system, as well as suggestions for possible alternative solutions inside or outside the system.

I would appreciate it if anyone knows about this or has ideas on the best way to proceed.

Hey nuloli, your question is really interesting! 😄

As far as I know, IKEA officially does not offer sliding doors for PLATSA, at least not in the standard range. The doors I know are usually hinged or folding doors. But many people come up with creative solutions: some use sliding door kits from third-party suppliers and then attach them to the PLATSA cabinet frames.

Of course, this means it’s not from IKEA, but with some DIY skills it’s doable. You just need to find the right track system that fits the width and height of the cabinet, otherwise it will be unstable.

My advice: measure your space carefully because sliding doors often require some wall space to the side, especially if they overlap.

If you are open to other options: maybe just fit the fronts with handle strips and choose hinges that are as quiet and smooth as possible, in case hinged or folding doors remain an option.

I’m curious if any professionals or DIY enthusiasts here know more 😉

That is correct. IKEA does not provide sliding doors as a standard option for the PLATSA system. The product descriptions and assembly instructions specify only hinged and folding doors as front options.

The PLATSA construction is based on relatively flexible carcasses designed to accommodate hinged doors but does not include a prefabricated track system for sliding doors.

Alternatively, customers can turn to modular accessories and third-party markets. When doing so, please note:
- A track system must be selected and installed to match the PLATSA dimensions.
- The existing pre-drilled holes and carcasses need to be checked for load-bearing capacity.
- Sliding doors require side overlap, which must be considered during space planning.

My advice: If you want to use sliding doors, consider custom-fit solutions or choose other systems that offer sliding doors as a factory option.

Good morning nuloli,

I can add that material options for PLATSA doors are quite limited: there are doors in various shades and with either smooth or slightly textured surfaces, all made from MDF.

However, as mentioned, there is no official IKEA sliding door product for PLATSA.

From user reports, sliding doors are usually custom-made or sourced from third-party suppliers. This generally works well if the track system is of high quality and installed precisely. Some caution is needed regarding the door weight, as PLATSA does not include extra reinforcements or special hangers for heavy doors.

Alternatively, you could combine the PLATSA system with curtains if you like that look and want more flexibility. Other IKEA systems, such as PAX, come with sliding doors built-in, which significantly reduces the effort.

Hope this helps with your planning.

That’s an interesting suggestion. I once tried using curtains instead of doors to enclose a small corner myself – it sounds unusual at first, but it actually works surprisingly well if you choose the right fabrics.

Especially if the space feels a bit more casual or you want to add some color, curtains can create real highlights.

However, if you decide to go with sliding doors or other fronts: be aware that the dimensions of the PLATSA system and door height are particularly important, as sliding door systems often won’t be compatible otherwise or may require modification.

In the end, it often comes down to your budget and DIY skills.

I’m keeping my fingers crossed that you find a solution that you enjoy.
