Good morning everyone,
I recently purchased a BILLY bookshelf from IKEA, and despite securing it to the wall multiple times, it still wobbles noticeably. I installed the mounting screws according to the instructions, using wall anchors in concrete, and the bookshelf is fairly level. However, I can feel a clear tilt when applying slight pressure to the side, which honestly doesn’t feel very safe.
My question: Why does my BILLY still wobble even though it’s attached to the wall?
I’d like to know whether the issue is with the bookshelf itself, the wall, or incorrect installation. Maybe there are structural factors I’ve overlooked? I appreciate any pointers, especially practical tips on how to make the bookshelf firm and stable.

Why does my BILLY wobble despite being fixed to the wall?First, you need to consider the type of attachment used: Was the shelf actually anchored into a load-bearing material? A common mistake is drilling into drywall and using basic screws that do not provide a secure hold there.
Additionally, the alignment of the anchors and screws is crucial. Are they installed perfectly straight and at the same height? An uneven installation or incorrect anchors can lead to unstable fixing.
Finally, wall irregularities might also play a role, which is common in older walls. Did you check the wall condition before installation?
It would be helpful to know exactly which anchors you used and what type of wall material the shelf is mounted in.

- incorrect wall plugs (e.g., for hollow walls instead of solid concrete),
- uneven wall or shelf,
- insufficient number of screws or loose screws.
Check the screws again; often tightening them firmly helps.

Why is my BILLY wobbly despite being attached to the wall?Your question is very well formulated and shows that you’ve already tried several things. To address the problem comprehensively, I would recommend checking the following points step by step:
1. Wall material and condition: Solid brick, concrete, or hollow wall? For hollow walls, special cavity anchors are necessary; otherwise, there is no secure hold.
2. Type of anchor: Expansion anchors are ideal for concrete and brick, while drywall anchors are used for gypsum board. A mismatch often causes instability.
3. Mounting height and anchor points: It is recommended to have at least three attachment points (top, middle, bottom) to prevent tipping.
4. Quality of screws and their effective length behind the wall – especially if screws are too short, the connection will not hold.
5. Fit and condition of the shelving unit: Are the shelves fixed in place? Sometimes the flexibility of adjustable shelves can cause noticeable wobbling.
Additionally, when attaching the unit, check whether it sits flush against the wall; slightly wedging it can sometimes help by allowing a softer adjustment to avoid stress.
My question back to you: Are you using the provided IKEA fittings or have you used alternatives? That can also have an impact.

That alone was enough to feel some wobbling when touching it. After adding a screw in the middle as well, the shelf felt much more secure.
I completely understand how frustrating it is when you do everything properly and still feel uncertain. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that your problem will be resolved soon! 🙂

Often, people drill into drywall and use only basic screwsI’ve seen that happen with friends as well. Wobbly BILLY shelves are almost guaranteed if the wrong anchors are used. My advice: use the proper cavity anchors and be careful when installing them so that the shelf not only holds but is also stable.
By the way, sometimes it helps to fix the shelf ‘a little’ with small felt pads on the back where it meets the wall to prevent wobbling. It may sound simple, but it’s very practical if the wall is slightly uneven.
Keep at it, we’ll get it sorted! 😉
