Hello everyone,

I am currently facing a common issue with installing doors on the IKEA KALLAX shelving unit. My living situation is a bit unusual, as I want to install the KALLAX under a sloped ceiling. The doors I have installed are hitting the slope. My question is: Is it technically possible to cut or adjust the KALLAX doors at the top or bottom—depending on where the slope meets—so that they fit well against the slope without negatively affecting the door’s mechanics or stability? And if so, are there any specific tips or methods on how to best approach this? Ideally, I would like to avoid completely replacing the doors or carrying out major structural changes.

Has anyone had experience with trimming or modifying KALLAX doors, especially in connection with structural features like sloped ceilings? I would appreciate any advice on tools, procedures, or potential issues I should consider beforehand.

Thanks in advance!

In principle, yes, cutting the doors is possible, but with some limitations. The KALLAX doors are usually made of coated particleboard or MDF, which can be worked on relatively easily. It is important to follow the exact measurements when cutting, as an incorrect fit can affect functionality later on.

Also, make sure to properly seal the edges after cutting, otherwise moisture can penetrate the material and cause it to swell. Using power tools such as a plunge saw or precision multi-tool can help you work accurately.

For safety, you should also check whether trimming the edges affects the hinges or other mounting points.

I would simply mark the angle with a clear ruler or template and cut it cleanly with a jigsaw. Smooth the edges with sandpaper and possibly add matching edge banding.

Hello KATISI,

I have personally adjusted wardrobe and sideboard doors to fit sloped ceilings with slight angling modifications. The most important thing is to measure very precisely beforehand and create a template to avoid mistakes.

The doors from KALLAX are relatively thin (about 1.5 cm thick (0.6 inches) for most models), so the cut should be smooth and easy. I recommend using a circular saw with a guide rail because it provides very straight and clean results.

A common mistake is cutting directly without protective film on the front surface. I have seen that this can cause chipping or fraying of the surface, which looks unattractive. So, always keep the protective film on or cover it with painter’s tape before cutting.

After cutting, I strongly recommend protecting the cut edges with wood varnish or at least edge banding. Otherwise, the doors may warp or swell when exposed to moisture.

If the door needs to be shortened on the hinge side, make sure to measure carefully and possibly reposition the hinges. Often, it is easier to shorten the door at the top or bottom edge rather than on the hinged side.

Good luck with your project!

For additional technical information:

- KALLAX doors are generally made of coated wood-based material with a melamine resin-coated surface.
- Cutting is basically possible but irreversible and affects the warranty.
- When trimming, it is essential to pay close attention to the exact alignment of the grain and surface.
- Use an electric saw with a fine blade, such as a multi-tool or a plunge saw with a suitable blade, to avoid fraying.
- After cutting, treat the edges with special plastic or melamine edge banding to prevent water damage.
- Pay close attention to the position and function of the hinges, as relocating them is complicated and can harm the mechanism.

My advice: If significant trimming is required, a custom-made element might be more practical.

Exactly. Additionally, I would suggest removing all fittings before shortening to avoid damage. KALLAX doors often have push-to-open or magnetic closures, which can easily cause functional issues if the door does not sit flush.
