Hello everyone, I am planning to build custom drawer inserts for my Ikea Besta cabinets to improve storage organization. Unfortunately, I can hardly find any detailed guides that address the dimensions and specific features of the Besta system. My question is: which materials and tools are best suited for DIY drawer inserts that are sturdy yet flexible enough to efficiently sort items like cutlery, documents, or small parts? I am also interested in how to make the inserts fit precisely without affecting the drawer’s functionality. A few tips on cutting dimensions, fastening options, or surface treatments would be very helpful.

When building drawer inserts, measure the interior dimensions precisely and subtract about 2 mm (0.08 inches) per side. Use simple wooden strips as dividers, which can be fixed with wood glue and small nails. A basic clear varnish is sufficient for the surface; it dries quickly and protects against moisture.

That’s a good approach, especially if you want to stay flexible and possibly change individual compartments later on. I often use small magnetic strips at the bottom of the inserts, which allows me to slot in adjustable partitions made from thin wooden strips or acrylic sheet and rearrange them at any time.

Here’s a tip: sand all edges well before painting. This improves paint adhesion and prevents chipping.

You can also build ready-made drawer inserts yourself using wooden strips by simply cutting them to length and laying them out in a grid. Make sure the insert slides smoothly by leaving small gaps. For moisture protection, a simple clear varnish is sufficient. If you are organizing small items, use felt or rubber liners on the bottom to prevent slipping.
