My specific question is: How can IKEA PLATSA furniture be effectively protected from moisture damage without compromising the furniture’s function and design? I would like to know which preventive measures have proven effective in the long term, especially regarding possible mold growth, material deformation, or wood swelling. Are there particular products, surface treatments, or construction adjustments that you would recommend? I would greatly appreciate practical tips and experiences with these furniture pieces in humid conditions.
As a supplement: IKEA PLATSA furniture is mostly made of particleboard with a laminated finish, which is generally sensitive to prolonged moisture exposure. Here are some recommendations for a moisture protection strategy:
- Place the furniture as far away as possible from direct sources of moisture, such as leaking windows or water pipes.
- Use special water-repellent wood protection varnishes or sealants that are suitable for laminated particleboard.
- Avoid consistently high humidity by ensuring good ventilation.
- In exceptional cases, dehumidifiers can help maintain low indoor humidity levels.
The protection measures should be checked for compatibility with the materials to avoid damaging the finishes.

Hey, I really like the PLATSA series, but when it comes to moisture, you definitely need to be careful! 😅 My advice: leave some space between the wall and the furniture so air can circulate, preventing heat or moisture buildup that can damage the furniture. I also placed moisture-resistant cork pads underneath – they protect and look nice! And yes, a dehumidifier is great if humidity becomes an issue. This way, your furniture stays dry and happy!

I really like the combination of good air circulation and a protective coating! I treated my PLATSA furniture with a matte nano-sealant and haven’t had any worries about moisture since. The furniture looks great and feels better protected! A small investment that’s worth it! 🙂
