kinapuGood morning everyone,
I am currently planning to install Ikea PAX wardrobes in a room with a sloped ceiling. Since the standard wardrobes are designed for straight walls, my question is how to mount them as safely and securely as possible on sloped walls. Specifically, I mean:
- Are there proven fastening methods that reliably hold on angled walls?
- Should the PAX wardrobes be modified before installation, or are special Ikea extensions recommended?
- Which types of anchors or screws are advisable, especially if the sloped ceiling is covered with drywall rather than load-bearing wood?
- What should definitely be considered when leveling and anchoring to prevent the wardrobes from wobbling or developing pressure marks?
I look forward to your tips, experiences, or even illustrated descriptions of how you have handled similar situations. Thanks in advance for your replies!

Are there any proven fastening techniques that reliably hold even on sloping walls?Hey, really exciting challenge! 😃 From my experience: It’s important to always secure the cabinets additionally to the wall—and for sloped ceilings, it’s best to use special brackets that you adjust to fit the angle. I used metal brackets that I bent flexibly. This way, the cabinets sit firmly and don’t wobble at all! Also, always make sure to screw into the load-bearing timber structure (e.g., rafters or purlins)—that holds extremely well.
So: be brave, take brackets, adjust them, drill, and tighten! 👍

REOHEINRIC31 Jul 2020 09:57For safe installation of PAX wardrobes on sloped ceilings, please consider the following:
- Check the condition of the wall behind the slope. Load-bearing wooden battens or beams provide secure support, while drywall alone has limited load capacity.
- If drywall is present, use cavity anchors for medium loads, or preferably toggle bolts designed for high load capacity in drywall.
- An optimal solution for sloped walls are adjustable mounting rails or brackets that allow angle adjustment.
- Use the wall anchors supplied by Ikea together with additional screws fixed into load-bearing structures.
- Finally, carefully measure the angle of the sloped ceiling and align it with the bracket to avoid pressure points on the wardrobe.

First of all: It’s great that you are considering safety before installation! The roof slope is a tricky factor.
I recommend carrying out the installation in two steps:
- First, accurately measure the angle of the roof slope using a protractor or a bevel gauge.
- Then, purchase suitable brackets or adjust them yourself to secure the cabinet.
If you only have drywall that is not load-bearing, you can either properly attach a wooden batten to the roof joists and anchor the cabinet to it, or provide a support under the cabinet base so that the weight is supported firmly on the floor.
In addition, I recommend securing the PAX cabinets with the included wall brackets, but not relying solely on them. Depending on the situation, add extra reinforcements to greatly increase stability.

If drywall is present, use hollow wall anchors for medium loads or, better yet, toggle bolts for drywall with high load capacity. This is an important point, but I wonder: Is the sloped ceiling really just a single drywall panel, or is there a load-bearing counter battens/joist structure behind it?
It would be critical if only drywall is present, as the heavy load of a PAX wardrobe is applied to a small anchoring surface.
Also: Ikea does not provide any specific components adapted for mounting PAX wardrobes on sloped ceilings. This means you should definitely consider how the load distribution prevents the structure from failing or warping.
I am skeptical whether simple brackets are enough if they are incorrectly placed or the screws are not optimally fixed.
Hello kinapu,
To securely install the PAX wardrobe on a sloped ceiling, a meticulous approach is essential. I recommend the following comprehensive procedure:
1. Determine the angle of the sloped ceiling using appropriate measuring tools (protractor or bevel gauge).
2. Inspect the wall structure behind the covering: check if wooden rafters or beams are present. Ideally, anchors should be fixed directly into these.
3. If drywall/plasterboard is present, you should use at least (optionally in combination) the following types of fasteners:
- Hollow-wall metal anchors (e.g., metal cavity anchors or toggle bolts)
- Heavy-duty anchors, if the substructure allows.
4. You can adjust the mounting brackets by bending sturdy metal brackets. Consider the following:
- The brackets must be load-bearing and precisely fit the angle of the sloped ceiling.
- Important: pre-drill holes carefully without damaging the wall.
5. Additional reinforcement can be done by mounting a horizontal wooden batten as a support surface under the wardrobe (e.g., attached to the floor or accessory rails).
6. The upper stabilizing bracket on the wardrobe should not only be screwed into the back panel but also reinforced with screwed constructions.
I would like to know your exact measurements and wall conditions to provide more specific advice.
