Tena44Hello everyone,
I have an Ikea Metod wooden countertop (rather dark oiled) and would like to know how to optimize its cleaning to keep the material looking great for a long time and to avoid damage such as watermarks, discoloration, or stained spots.
I am mainly referring to daily or regular cleaning. What products and methods do you recommend for this type of wooden countertop?
Which care products should I use? Are there specific things to definitely avoid, especially when dealing with water or cleaning agents?
I look forward to detailed tips and experiences, as it is important to me that the countertop stays in good condition for a long time and requires as little maintenance effort as possible.

Hello Tena44,
your question is very well formulated and shows that you are thinking carefully about the right care. Wooden worktops, especially oiled ones, require gentle treatment.
Generally, I recommend starting by cleaning with a slightly damp, soft cloth – not wet, just moist. Dust or crumbs should be removed with a dry cloth.
The best cleaning agents are pH-neutral soap or special wood cleaners. Aggressive cleaners or excessive water should be strictly avoided, as moisture can cause the wood to swell and leave stains.
For maintenance, it helps to regularly treat the surface with a care oil designed for oiled wood surfaces. This protects and refreshes the appearance. If the worktop is heavily used, this can be done every few months. You can also lightly sand the surface afterward with fine sandpaper (e.g., 240 grit) before applying the oil.
I hope this gives you a good starting point. If you like, I can also provide more details on specific products or procedures.

Hello Tena44,
I really appreciate how thoughtfully you’re already considering the care of your Ikea wooden countertop! Surfaces like these are quite delicate, and of course, you want them to last as long as possible and keep looking nice.
At first, I was unsure about how to handle my Metod countertop, too. After making some mistakes like using too much water, I realized it’s less about the exact cleaning method and more about developing the right habits.
The key is to act quickly if something gets spilled. Don’t let it sit; wipe it off with a damp cloth and then dry the surface with a dry cloth.
The wood’s outer layer tends to absorb liquids easily, and if this happens repeatedly or if unsuitable cleaning products are used, stains can develop. That’s why I only use mild soap and as little water as necessary.
I completely understand your question about cleaning products and maintenance since nobody wants to make mistakes they’ll regret later. Do you already have any specific products in mind?

LuMarcel4329 Mar 2016 07:04In questions regarding wooden countertops, I think it’s important to also consider the “chemical components” of the cleaning products.
Many recommend traditional wood oils, but often people don’t realize how the surface can be affected by certain additives—such as fragrances, solvents, or preservatives.
A question for you, Tena44: Do you know if your Ikea Metod countertop has a specific wood treatment or surface finish (purely oiled, hard wax, lacquered)? The exact finish largely determines what products you can use.
Besides cleaning gently and carefully, it’s also important to monitor the humidity level in the room. Too dry or too humid air can negatively affect the countertop, especially in small kitchens.
For me, experimenting is important, but always starting with small areas to test the effect.

Thank you for your responses so far!
@LuMarcel43: The surface is described by Ikea as oiled solid wood, with no lacquer coating. That is what Ikea states.
I think your point is correct that choosing the right maintenance oil and handling moisture and chemicals carefully is especially important.
@relupa: So far, I have only used mild dish soap and cleaned fairly quickly with water and a sponge. But I notice a slight roughening and some dull spots after a while. That’s why I want to maintain it more intensively.
I am open to suggestions on which maintenance oils you recommend or if you use any gentle alternative home remedies. Something that doesn’t build up too much, because I don’t want the countertop to become shiny, just protected.

For oiled surfaces, a sponge cloth with pure natural linseed oil can be a good way to maintain it, as it absorbs well and protects against moisture. Alternatively, there are maintenance oils available at hardware stores that are suitable for kitchen countertops and do not contain strong fragrances or chemical additives.

It is important to act quickly when something is spilled.I can only agree with that: The faster you absorb liquids, the better. Avoid standing moisture or prolonged exposure to liquids.
And one more tip for daily cleaning: A light splash of vinegar in water can have antibacterial effects, but be cautious with wood surfaces as it can damage the wood.
What I find most important is to avoid aggressive chemicals and abrasive sponges, and rather use soft cloths or microfiber cloths.
