ᐅ Which color combinations work particularly well with Ikea Besta furniture?

OnmokauHello everyone,
I am currently redesigning my living room with Ikea Besta furniture. I am wondering: which color combinations work best with Ikea Besta units to create a modern and harmonious overall look?
The Besta series is quite minimalist, often available in white or black-brown, which leaves a lot of room for color choices. I am looking for timeless color schemes that will still look appealing in a few years, but also for creative ideas that really make the furniture stand out.
I am especially interested in which wall colors, rug colors, or additional accent colors (e.g., cushions, decorations) have proven successful. Are there any recommended combinations for the Besta series? Or maybe colors that should be avoided to prevent a visually cluttered effect?
Thanks in advance for your experiences and tips!

Which color combinations work especially well with Ikea Besta furniture to create a modern and harmonious overall look?Hey, great question! The Besta series is really versatile. Personally, I like to go with
- White or light gray walls, which highlight the furniture and create an airy feel.
- Then a strong pastel blue or sage green as an accent color, for example on cushions or a vase.
This combination looks modern without being too overpowering. Dark brown Besta furniture pairs nicely with warm earth tones, like rust or ochre yellow. This creates a cozy but not boring setting.
A quick tip: Don’t be afraid of color, but it’s best to stick to 2-3 main colors to avoid a chaotic look. 🙂
I like to expand the perspective with a bit more depth:
For Ikea Besta furniture, which is usually designed in a minimalist and straightforward style, it’s helpful to consider color choices and combinations on several levels:
- Furniture color: White and dark brown are standard options. White is neutral, while dark brown creates contrast.
- Wall colors: For white Besta units, warm gray tones (e.g., RAL 7032 Pebble Grey) or subtle earth tones work best. This creates a cozy space without overpowering the furniture.
- For dark brown furniture, cool colors like pale blue or sage complement nicely and help break up the darkness.
- For accents, I recommend metallic colors or materials such as copper, brass, or brushed stainless steel, which add subtle highlights without dominating.
It is important to consider the lighting conditions in the room: If there is little natural light, I advise against dark walls, as they tend to make the space feel cramped. Instead, choose light wall colors and use stronger color accents through textiles and decor.
Which Besta variants are you using? Doors, open compartments, or a mix? This makes a difference in how the colors will appear.

I like to broaden the perspective with a bit of depthI generally agree with that but would like to point out that the choice of color shouldn’t be overcomplicated theoretically. There are too many variations within the Besta series and the room conditions to give a universal recommendation.
Personal perception regarding color and mood also plays a significant role. Of course, warm earth tones or cool blues are often recommended –

Daring colors don’t hurt, but it’s best to limit yourself to 2-3 main colorsWhat’s important is to really test these colors within the overall setting. Many color schemes look great in pictures but can make the space seem smaller or more chaotic in reality.
Therefore, I would advise: test color samples on the wall, view them under both daylight and artificial light, and also compare furniture samples side by side—these usually offer the best guidance.

Colors often look very different in a room than on paint swatches. Another tip: you can experiment quite flexibly with small color accents in decorations and textiles without having to repaint everything.
And for those who want to add a splash of color without going overboard, trying a turquoise-blue wall with white Besta units can look fresh and lively, without being overwhelming. 😉
