ᐅ After repositioning, my KALLAX is difficult to realign properly.

JoellauHello everyone,
I’m facing a frustrating issue with my IKEA KALLAX shelf unit since I moved it. After repositioning it against a different wall, it’s no longer easy to align as before. Specifically, it no longer sits flush against the wall, it rocks slightly, and small gaps have appeared between the back panel and the wall, even though I’ve carefully leveled it. I tried adjusting the feet, but it’s still difficult to find the right angle and stability—it almost feels like the boards have warped slightly from the move or the connecting system has loosened a bit. Has anyone dealt with this and knows the best way to stabilize and properly align a KALLAX after relocating it? I’d appreciate practical tips, tools, or tricks to make this easier. Concrete advice would be great, as I want to keep using the shelf permanently without constantly having to readjust it.

It almost seems as if the boards have slightly warped due to movement or the connection system is giving a little. That is a plausible explanation. KALLAX shelves are modular furniture made up of individual panels that are screwed and glued together. When relocating them, slight tensions may release, or the fasteners in the drill holes may develop some play. Uneven flooring or a lack of wall anchoring often also cause issues.
My recommendation:
1. Check the surface with a small spirit level. If the floor is uneven, small shims or felt-tipped leveling feet can help to compensate.
2. KALLAX does not come with fixed wall anchoring as standard, but securing the unit to the wall with brackets can prevent lateral tipping.
3. For tensions, replacing screws or tightening existing ones can help.
4. When installing the back panel, ensure it fits fully and evenly, as it significantly increases stability.
If that still does not resolve the issue, a small adjustment of the joints using wood glue can add extra stability.
Good morning,
I would like to explain this in more detail and provide a brief guide to resolve the most common issues when leveling the KALLAX after moving it to a new location:
1. Preparation: The KALLAX is not very heavy, so you can carefully lay the shelf down (with assistance) and check if all screws (especially at the joints) are still tight. If not, tighten them.
2. Floor check: As mentioned before, the floor is often the main cause. Place a spirit level on the surface in different directions. It is especially helpful to use adjustable furniture feet or furniture wedges that can be attached to the legs to compensate for unevenness.
3. Check the back panel: The thin MDF panels forming the back are not only dust protection but also an important stabilizer. If the back panel is damaged or warped from moving, it should be replaced or at least reattached securely.
4. Attach mounting brackets: Many KALLAX models do not come with sufficient wall fixing since they are designed as room dividers, but if placed near a wall, it is advisable to screw small mounting brackets to the upper rear side.
5. Retighten screws and, if necessary, make slight adjustments. If you have time, you can also gently align edges with a wooden block and hammer, but avoid using force.
From my own experience with several moves, I learned that leveling in small steps and using good tools works best.

KALLAX does not include fixed wall anchoring as standardReally? IKEA wants everything to be easy and quick to assemble – but using it without wall mounting is frankly negligent. Any piece of furniture will move with the slightest touch.
And then there’s the issue of warping – I believe this problem mainly arises from incorrect or missing fixings. If you care about stability, get suitable metal brackets, securely attach the back panel, and use adjustable feet to compensate for uneven floors.
But what I find more interesting is: why do people move their furniture around so often? Space is usually fixed. It’s also good that no one has mentioned spontaneous KALLAX reinforcements or braces so far – IKEA offers few options there themselves.
My advice: don’t overcomplicate it, just securely anchor the shelf unit in its final position. Otherwise, the problem won’t improve.

From my experience with several moves, I have learned that leveling in small steps and using good tools works best.I can only agree with that. Additionally, I would like to point out a specific feature of the KALLAX connection system: the screws fit into pre-drilled holes, which can wear out and develop looseness with frequent movement. So, if the shelf appears unstable, carefully re-drilling and using larger or longer screws usually helps to secure the shelf more firmly.
It is also helpful to have a second person available to align and hold the unit, as adjusting both the front and back sides simultaneously can otherwise lead to misalignment.
In summary:
- Check and, if necessary, level the floor
- Inspect and, if necessary, replace screws
- Add wall anchoring
- Check the back panel
- Level carefully in small steps
Following this approach will result in a stable assembly.
