Hello everyone, I am currently planning the installation of a new kitchen using the IKEA Metod system and have spent quite some time looking into the cabinets and fronts. What is still causing me some headaches is choosing the right material for the kitchen backsplash.

I am particularly interested in which materials are best suited for a backsplash that is durable, easy to maintain, and visually appealing at the same time. Of course, the material also needs to be heat-resistant and water-resistant, since splashes and cooking will happen nearby.

Which types of materials would you recommend here? Glass, tiles, aluminum, plastic – what has proven effective in practice? And are there any special considerations for attaching it to the Metod cabinet carcasses that I should be aware of?

I look forward to your experiences and tips!

Hello Alain,

This is a very important question, as the backsplash is often an underestimated element in a kitchen. From my experience, high-quality glass backsplashes are not only visually appealing but also very easy to maintain and heat resistant. Especially tempered glass (ESG - single-pane safety glass) is sturdy and more shatter-resistant than regular glass.

It is important to ensure a clean and flat surface during installation; otherwise, tensions and cracks can develop. For fastening to the Metod system, mounting with silicone and screw anchors is usually recommended, provided the backsplash thickness allows it.

Alternatively, coated composite panels or aluminum composite panels are good options, as they are especially durable and water-resistant, though they do not appear as high-end as glass. Plastic panels are more affordable but tend to scratch more easily and yellow over time.

I hope this gives you a good overview.

I’d like to go into a bit more detail because the choice of kitchen backsplash involves quite a few technical aspects that are sometimes underestimated.

First: With the IKEA Metod system, the back panel profile is usually made of wood-based material, and the actual back panels are often thin sheets that cannot carry much load during installation. Therefore, it is important that the selected material does not require excessive weight support or complicated fastening methods.

1. Glass (tempered safety glass): As mentioned, very popular. Visually elegant, easy to clean, heat resistant up to around 150°C (302°F). A thickness of about 6-8mm (1/4–5/16 inch) is advisable. Mounting can be done directly on the cabinet carcass with small spacers or glued to the wall. Advantages: hygienic and extremely durable.

2. Tiles: Classic choice. However, installation is more complex, mainly because the cabinet carcass rarely serves as a suitable load-bearing surface. It is best to fix the tiles on the wall behind, not directly on the cabinets.

3. Aluminum composite panels (e.g., Dibond): Very sturdy, lightweight, and stable. Also water- and heat-resistant. Surfaces can be matte, glossy, or brushed, offering great design versatility. Mounting works well with screws or adhesive options.

4. Plastic panels (e.g., acrylic or high-pressure laminate): Cost-effective and versatile. However, some plastics tend to discolor and are more prone to scratching. It is important to choose heat-resistant types, especially near the stove where high temperatures can occur.

Regarding installation, you should also consider whether the backsplash is mounted directly on the wall, on the Metod cabinet carcasses, or with spacing. Especially for glass and aluminum, a substructure is recommended to avoid stress.

Perhaps you can provide information about the condition of your kitchen wall and how much space you plan between the wall and the cabinets? These factors are crucial for choosing the right material and mounting method.

I hope this helps you!

I installed a glass backsplash in my Metod kitchen. Tempered glass is strong and heat-resistant. Installation is simple: seal with silicone and screw in the brackets. It creates a clean look and is very easy to maintain.

That’s a good point. It often happens that the wall is uneven or only a small gap is planned. Especially in these cases, flexible materials like laminate or special kitchen backsplashes made of HPL (High Pressure Laminate) become interesting. They are thin, can be glued to various surfaces, and are very durable.

In my experience, HPL panels for IKEA Metod backsplashes are a very practical solution, especially when it comes to easy installation and longevity. You should make sure that the panels are heat-resistant, at least up to 100°C (212°F), and provide a suitable adhesive surface.

Only with very direct heat exposure, such as around the stove, should you choose more robust materials—glass or aluminum are often better suited in those areas.
