Hello everyone, I am currently planning to upgrade my BILLY shelf from IKEA with glass doors, as I really like the look and the protection from dust. My specific question is: which types of glass doors are truly compatible with the BILLY shelf, especially regarding dimensions, installation options, and availability from IKEA or third-party suppliers? Are there differences depending on the production year of the shelf or the depth (28cm (11 inches) vs. 40cm (16 inches))? Also, can the glass sliding or hinged doors be easily installed by oneself, or is it better to hire a professional? I look forward to your experiences and recommendations – including any alternatives in case the original doors do not fit.

Hi Kulau61, great that you want to upgrade your BILLY bookshelf with glass doors – it looks really stylish and adds that extra touch! 🙂 The original BILLY glass doors from IKEA are designed for shelves with a depth of 40 cm (16 inches); unfortunately, they do not fit models with a depth of 28 cm (11 inches). Manufacturing years may vary slightly because IKEA sometimes makes minor adjustments to the drilling, but in general, the doors are compatible with the standard models.

So, if you have a 40 cm (16 inches) deep shelf, use the original glass doors since the hinges fit perfectly and installation (with the included drilling template) is doable for DIY enthusiasts.

If you have a 28 cm (11 inches) deep shelf, there are third-party models available or the option to install larger doors with spacers – but this can be fiddly and not always very stable. You don’t necessarily need a professional, but some handyman skills are helpful.

One tip: When installing the doors, be careful not to put pressure on the glass panels – they are usually quite thin and fragile. Good luck and have fun pimping your BILLY! 😉

Hello Kulau61, I would like to address your questions in more detail so that you can make an informed decision.

First of all: The original BILLY glass doors from IKEA are specifically designed for the 40 cm (16 inch) deep shelves. This mainly relates to the required depth and the mounting points. If you have a 28 cm (11 inch) deep shelf, the original doors generally will not fit. In this case, you can either opt for custom-made solutions or third-party products, which often offer individual sizes.

The difference in production year is indeed relevant, as IKEA has slightly changed the positioning of the drill holes for the hinges over time. As a result, older shelves may not readily accommodate the doors. A careful inspection of the exact shelves you have is helpful here.

Regarding installation: Original doors usually come with simple instructions and a drilling template. This makes installation manageable for experienced DIYers. If you are unsure or if the doors are very large and heavy, it might be advisable to consult a professional for assistance.

As an alternative to hinged glass doors, there are also sliding glass doors available from some third-party suppliers as tailored solutions. These are often more complex to install but can be especially practical in tight spaces.

If you encounter issues with stability or fit, retrofitting additional brackets or seals to secure the doors and ensure a good closure is worthwhile.

I hope this information helps you!

In my opinion, this is a very important point that is often overlooked. It is not enough to compare the dimensions of the doors with the shelving unit. The drill holes are a technical variable that can significantly complicate installation if they do not match.

Furthermore, one should consider whether using third-party doors is really cost-effective. For example, standard glass doors made for other shelving units or cabinets often do not fit with millimeter precision, which over time can lead to mechanical problems with the hinges or door guides.

The question of whether to undertake the installation yourself is, in my view, not only a matter of DIY skills. It also involves liability: Who is responsible in case of glass breakage? Is safety ensured? Especially with doors that are frequently used, it becomes clear over time whether the construction holds up.

Therefore, I recommend that when retrofitting glass doors on BILLY shelves, either original accessories or truly tested and certified retrofit kits should be used – and when in doubt, professional installation should be considered.

Good point! Safety is often underestimated. 😉

I would add: If you’re looking for a simple solution, go with the original IKEA doors. They are tested and offer good value for money.

Upgrading with third-party glass is definitely interesting, but if you’re not a professional, you risk causing damage. Still, with some patience and a steady hand, it often works out on your own.

And if not, always keep the option open: a good neighbor, friend, or even an affordable handyman can help. You don’t have to do everything alone. 🙂

In any case: Good luck sprucing up your BILLY, it will look classically stylish!
