Hello everyone, I have owned the popular Malm dresser from IKEA for some time now and am generally satisfied with the quality and design. However, I am bothered by a persistent squeaking noise that occurs when closing the drawers. I have tried to understand why this happens, but I suspect it is due to the interaction between the metal slides and the rollers.

I am especially interested if anyone has had similar experiences and what solutions or maintenance tips can help to eliminate the squeaking permanently. I would also appreciate recommendations on how to keep the Malm dressers in good condition despite this noise – I love these pieces but want to maintain them well.

Thanks in advance for your help!

The squeaking usually occurs due to friction between the metal tracks and the plastic or metal rollers of the drawers. Thorough and regular cleaning of the tracks significantly reduces the noise.

For lubrication, I recommend using a suitable silicone or Teflon spray; traditional oils are often not ideal because they attract dust and become dirty over time. It is important to apply the spray sparingly and remove any excess. If the squeaking persists, check whether individual rollers need to be replaced.

Thoroughly clean the drawer slides and apply silicone spray. Avoid using oil. Check the rollers and replace them if necessary.

It should be added that even small particles like dust or fibers often cause disturbing noises. A thorough, step-by-step cleaning is recommended here: fully pull out the drawer and clean the slides with a dry, lint-free cloth. Then lightly spray the sliding surfaces with silicone spray—use only a small amount to avoid buildup.

Sometimes the runners are slightly bent, or the screws loosen, which can worsen the problem. Therefore, it is important to regularly check and, if necessary, tighten or readjust them so the drawer runs straight.

If you like, I can also provide a detailed guide on how to remove and inspect the runner. Missing or damaged parts could also be the cause.

Thank you, I hadn’t considered that point. Is there a recommended method to reliably check this without having to completely disassemble the dresser?

Regarding lubrication, I have tried WD-40 so far, but that seems to have been a bad idea. Silicone or PTFE spray sounds more compatible with the plastic—does anyone have a product recommendation?

And yes, a step-by-step guide would be great, preferably also with tips on potential pitfalls when dismantling the runners.

You can usually check the slides by fully pulling out the drawer and carefully inspecting the slides for proper alignment. Minor adjustments can be made by gently pressing to correct any deformations.

WD-40 is not ideal as a lubricant for sliding bearings because it leaves residues over time. Specialized silicone sprays from brands like "Würth" or "Caramba" are better suited, as they work well on both metal and plastic and do not attract dust.

The rule here is: less is more. Using too much lubricant can cause dirt buildup and other issues.
