Hello everyone, I have an IKEA Billy bookcase and I’m annoyed by some scratches on the doors and side panels. Although most of them are just surface-level, they are still bothersome and quite noticeable in some areas. My question is: What methods or products are available to make scratches on Billy bookcases as invisible as possible, without repainting the furniture or damaging it further? I would like to know which materials work, whether repair kits from hardware stores can be used, and which tips are truly helpful to keep the surface looking good. Thanks in advance for your help!

Buy a furniture correction pen in the matching color, apply carefully, and wipe off with a microfiber cloth. That sounds simple, but it isn’t always. I would like to add: especially with melamine surfaces, you should check the chemical base of such pens, as some solvents can damage the laminate.
Furthermore, preparation is crucial. Clean the area thoroughly beforehand with a mild detergent that leaves no residue. Then let the surface dry completely.
When applying, it is advisable to use the pen repeatedly with light, thin dots rather than applying generously. This way, you can better control the amount of color and avoid unnecessary color differences.
In my experience, the result improves significantly if you let the pen dry for about 10–15 minutes afterward and then lightly polish the surface to even it out.
For larger scratches, a combination of furniture filler and subsequent repainting is also recommended.

If you want to do it properly, then yes, step-by-step and with the right products.
Additionally, I would like to mention that for repairing a BILLY shelf with melamine resin coating, solvents or solvent-based coatings should not be used, as they can dissolve the material.
Another thing that is often overlooked: some scratches can visually disappear if you gently rub the edges of the scratches with a cotton swab and a little colorless furniture oil. The oil penetrates slightly into the small "indentations," making the area less noticeable to the eye.
My tip: test on an inconspicuous area first, clean beforehand, and use sparingly.
