ᐅ My Kallax shelf moves whenever it’s touched – how can I stop it?

Hello everyone, I have a Kallax shelf from IKEA that I mounted on casters because I like to move it around the room flexibly. Unfortunately, the entire shelf rolls away even with the slightest touch or vibration, which is quite annoying, especially when it’s loaded.

My problem now is: How can I prevent the shelf from rolling away from light bumps or touches without completely removing the casters? Is there a way to lock the casters or another trick to keep the shelf securely in place when I want, but still be able to move it when needed?

I would appreciate practical, easy-to-implement solutions that do not compromise the shelf’s stability.

Thanks for the tips so far! I’m currently considering whether to replace the rollers completely or just buy additional brake clamps. But I’m wondering: How durable are aftermarket brakes in the long term? Are the locking mechanisms generally reliable, or could they come loose easily? And what about the installation – does it affect the stability of the roller? If anyone has experience with this, I’d really appreciate your input.

They generally last well if purchased with good quality. It is important that they fit the existing axle properly and are correctly secured. Installation is usually straightforward, involving a few screws or clips. The stability of the wheel remains unaffected since the brake acts externally.

Here is a structured summary of the best practices:

1. Casters with integrated locking brakes: The most reliable method, as they are built into the caster system and offer easy operation.

2. Retrofit brake systems: Suitable when the original casters are to be retained, but they often provide less holding power than integrated models.

3. Improving floor grip: Using rubber mats under the shelving unit or rubber casters increases friction.

It is important to consider the load capacity of the casters to avoid overloading and potential brake failure. Combining several measures is often advisable.

Another idea is to wedge small chocks or stoppers behind or beside the casters. This mechanical stop is flexible and can be easily removed. This way, the shelf remains movable but does not roll away immediately from every touch.

Absolutely right. Additionally, if you use wooden shims, you can attach some non-slip material (felt or rubber) to prevent slipping. This also protects both the floor and the casters.

In conclusion: If none of these options work, you can securely fasten the shelf directly to the wall. This is safe but less flexible. You need to weigh this depending on how you plan to use it.
