Hello everyone,

I recently moved my KALLAX shelf unit from IKEA several times and noticed that there are unpleasant and sometimes quite noticeable scuff marks and abrasions on the edges and surfaces of the carcass after moving the furniture. I’m curious if anyone else has had similar experiences: Have you noticed scuff marks or wear spots on the KALLAX carcass when the piece was moved or rearranged? What do you think causes this, and are there effective ways to prevent these marks or at least repair the damage? I would appreciate any tips on prevention and care for the carcass. I mainly use the shelf in the living room, and the moving usually happens on laminate flooring. Thank you in advance!

The scuff marks on the KALLAX are often caused by two factors: first, the rough floor surface or foreign particles like small stones that rub against the unit when it is moved. Second, the material properties of the surface, which is relatively sensitive to mechanical stress.

To protect it, I recommend attaching felt pads under the unit. These significantly reduce friction when moving it. If damage has already occurred, furniture touch-up markers or suitable repair kits for wood surfaces can help—depending on the exact type of surface affected.

For laminate flooring, it is especially important to remove dirt before moving the furniture.

Felt pads are the best solution to prevent abrasion marks. I have been using them for years and have not had any damage to the furniture body despite frequent moving of the furniture.

Hello Henry,

I can understand your observation well. The KALLAX is indeed sturdy, but the surface is a coated particleboard, which remains relatively sensitive to abrasion and scratches. If you regularly slide the shelving unit on laminate flooring, the risk of such wear marks increases.

In addition to using felt pads, I recommend making sure the floor is clean and free of small stones or dust particles under the unit. Even tiny grains of sand can cause scratches when sliding.

Sometimes it also helps to lift the unit instead of sliding it—although this can be a bit cumbersome with larger models. For repairing existing marks, there are repair waxes or wood markers in matching colors to make the blemishes less noticeable.

If you like, I can send you a link to a good guide on how to do these repairs yourself.

It’s interesting that you all rely so much on felt pads.

It almost sounds like the KALLAX from IKEA isn’t designed for regular repositioning of the furniture.

Why would someone buy furniture that then needs additional accessories to protect it during movement? Isn’t that a design flaw?

I’m genuinely curious if anyone here has experience with alternative bases or professional solutions that might be more durable than simple felt pads.

That is a valid point, but the KALLAX, being a modular shelving unit made of coated particleboard, is generally quite affordable and not positioned in the high-end furniture category. Its surface is therefore not inherently very resistant to mechanical stress.

I can confirm that. Felt pads offer a simple, cost-effective, and efficient way to reduce friction between furniture and flooring. Aluminum or plastic glides can sometimes damage the furniture frame due to sharp edges or dirt.

If you move furniture around frequently, longer-term protections like a mat underneath the piece or special wheels with soft rubber coating are the more economical and durable options.
