Hello everyone,

I own several pieces of furniture from the IKEA Hemnes series and am considering how to upgrade them in a practical and visually appealing way. I am especially interested in options to improve stability and functionality with relatively simple methods, without losing the typical Hemnes design. Perhaps someone also knows clever upgrades to modernize drawers or doors, or to make the surfaces more durable.

Thank you very much for your ideas and experiences!

When stability is important, metal brackets (e.g., L-shaped) can be screwed inside the corners.

Additionally, replacing the original drawer slides with soft-close full-extension slides provides comfort and durability.

Why not add lighting as well? LED strips under shelves make everything feel cozier and more modern!

That’s a really good idea! I have actually been thinking about how to integrate lighting into the cabinets. Are there any proven solutions that fit well with the Hemnes series without major modifications? Preferably without visible cables.

For lighting, I can recommend battery-powered LED strips that can be easily attached with adhesive tape. No cables, no drilling. Some models even have motion sensors, which is especially practical for cabinets.

Otherwise, USB LED spotlights are an option if there are power outlets nearby.

Thanks for the tip, Eleanor! That sounds exactly like what I’m looking for. I’ll take a closer look and report back on how well it works in practice.

If anyone has additional advice on how to make surfaces more durable, please share!
