I have set up a room furnished entirely with Ikea Hemnes furniture, specifically dressers and cabinets. During repairs, I have noticed several minor issues, such as loose screws, warped wooden parts, or broken dowels. Therefore, my question to the community is: which tools are truly helpful for repairing Ikea Hemnes furniture? Do you need to use special tools, or are common hand tools sufficient? What methods and tools do you regularly use to address typical problems like tightening screws, aligning wooden parts, or fixing small breaks? I would appreciate recommendations, especially regarding screwdrivers, cordless drills, glue, or clamps.

A cordless drill and glue are obvious, but in the end, you keep screwing in the same spots.

This is not necessarily the case if the repairs are done correctly. Much more important than repeatedly re-screwing is thorough preparation of the repair areas, which means:

- filling holes with wood shavings,
- using high-quality glue,
- allowing sufficient curing time,
- and additionally using clamps to hold parts in place.

This significantly extends the durability of the repairs. In principle, there is nothing against Ikea Hemnes as a long-lasting piece of furniture, provided care and repairs are done properly.

For screw holes that have become stripped, I often use small wooden wedges or wood shavings combined with wood glue. A simple putty knife is enough to apply the shavings. I rarely use clamps; instead, I press the parts together manually several times. This method is effective and simple.

That approach might work for smaller furniture pieces or thinner layers. However, with Hemnes, where the components are quite solid and heavy, constantly pressing manually does not provide even pressure and, therefore, does not result in an optimal bond.

I recommend investing in clamps, which are also available as affordable sets. They save time and significantly improve the quality of the repair.

By the way: It is definitely useful to have screwdrivers in different sizes (PH1 and PH2). Ikea often uses PH2 screws, which should not be opened with a small screwdriver to avoid damaging the screw head.

Thanks, that is very helpful. I will make sure to get a set of screwdrivers in different sizes to avoid damage. I will also get some clamps and wood glue to use together.

If I also need a small chisel for adjusting the dowel holes: what would you recommend for this type of furniture? I don’t want to buy anything too expensive but that can still make precise cuts.
