Hello everyone,
I am planning to get a Kallax shelving unit from Ikea and want to use rattan inserts to give the shelf a more natural and cozy look. However, I have a question: Are Kallax shelves actually sturdy enough to hold rattan inserts securely and permanently, especially when storing somewhat heavier items?
Specifically, I am interested in whether the typical construction of the Kallax (that is, MDF panels with a white coating and relatively simple slot connections) is stable enough to support the lateral load and possible weight of the rattan baskets without the unit warping or getting damaged over time.
Maybe someone has personal experience with this, especially when the rattan inserts are somewhat larger and heavier?
I look forward to your opinions and advice!

Hello fukeo64,
nice project! 🙂 I have a similar shelving unit with various inserts myself and can say: the shelves are very sturdy, much stronger than you might expect. The snap-in connections hold up well, and as long as you don’t overload the rattan baskets, you shouldn’t have any issues.
The rattan inserts are usually not very heavy, and the shelving unit can handle some weight without problems. But if you plan to store really heavy items, I would be cautious – it’s a good idea to secure the shelf parts against slipping or to distribute the weight across several compartments.
So, yes, the shelving unit is definitely stable enough for everyday use with rattan baskets! 😉

That’s awesome, fukeo64! I love Ikea furniture, and rattan just fits perfectly with it! 😊
A few months ago, I used a Kallax shelf unit with rattan inserts and didn’t have any stability issues. Of course, you shouldn’t overload it, but for clothes, light books, and decorations, it’s ideal!
In my opinion, the Kallax is very well made and quite sturdy. It’s really fun to assemble a shelf like that and then decorate it with the baskets! Wishing you lots of success with your project! 🙂

The plug-in joints can withstand quite a bitI wouldn’t be too impressed by that. The MDF panels are sturdy, yes, but the plug-in joints themselves are not screwed together; they are simply fitted. Especially under lateral loads, this can lead to loosening or deformation over time.

You shouldn’t overload itThat’s the key point. Depending on how heavy the rattan inserts are and how fully loaded they are, overloading can occur. There are also reports that the lower compartments bend under heavy load.
My advice: If you value durability, the Kallax shelving unit should not only stand as per the manufacturer’s instructions but be mechanically supported, for example with additional screws or wall anchors.

I plan to use the rattan inserts mainly for clothes and light decorations, but some books might go in there as well. No extremely heavy loads, but the shelf should remain stable over time.
Would you recommend reinforcing the shelf with screws for added stability, or would it be better to choose a different shelf design altogether to be on the safe side? I don’t want any major modifications, but a little extra stability through small measures would be helpful.
