Are there any upcycling tips for IKEA Hemnes dressers, especially for the models with the typical wood fronts and warm color tones? I would like to know how to enhance these pieces visually and functionally without completely giving up the rather classic Hemnes aesthetic. Advice on surface treatment, drawer redesign, use of handles, or additional functions would be interesting. Are there any creative approaches that are not too complex in terms of craftsmanship, ideally without major structural alterations?

Simply sand down the dresser and paint it with chalk paint. Add new handles, and you're done. It immediately looks more modern and doesn't cost much.

I can add information about chalk paint, but please sand the surface lightly beforehand so the paint lasts longer. Especially with Hemnes-style wood fronts, sanding between coats after the first application helps improve opacity and adhesion. Regarding handles, I recommend metal handles in a vintage or industrial style. For a functional upgrade, you can line the inside of drawers with foam rubber to protect the contents and reduce noise. One often overlooked option: you can also equip a drawer with wooden inserts or dividers to keep things organized. If you like, I can also provide tips on proper painting techniques.

Replace handles and lightly sand edges. Then paint or stain, depending on your preference. For interior design, organizers made of wood or fabric can be helpful.

I wonder if it might be counterproductive to upgrade the Hemnes dresser without changing the fundamental design concept. The furniture is deliberately simple and classic. Wouldn't it be more effective either to completely redesign it with modern colors and clean lines or to use the Hemnes more as a raw material? For example: simply sanding down the wood and refinishing it or partially combining it with other materials? The question is also whether you want to give the furniture a new function or just improve its appearance.

I have often wondered myself how much effort and passion one should really invest. I think it’s great when you develop a personal style and make a chest of drawers unique, especially if you plan to keep it for a long time. However, people often lack ideas or the knowledge of how to treat wood so that it stays beautiful and doesn’t become vulnerable. A bit of courage to experiment is definitely helpful, but it shouldn’t be too stressful.
