Hello everyone,
I have several Billy shelves from Ikea at home that now have various stubborn stains. These are not just simple dust or water marks, but some are from felt-tip pens, grease, or even sticky residues from stickers. My question is: What is the best way to clean Billy shelves with these types of stains without damaging the surface? Are there any proven cleaning agents or techniques specifically suited for these situations? I am especially interested in which cleaners are safe to use and which ones should be avoided, since the surface is usually painted or melamine-coated. I look forward to your tips and experiences!

Hello Julian6,
for marker stains, you can try using alcohol, for example, acetone-free nail polish remover. Simply moisten a soft cloth and gently dab. For grease, dish soap and warm water help. Important: Use only a small amount of liquid to avoid swelling the surface. Good luck!

Hello Julian6,
It's great that you addressed the stains in detail. I recommend the following approach for Billy shelves with melamine surfaces:
1. Pen stains: Use rubbing alcohol (isopropanol) or acetone-free nail polish remover. Dab gently, do not rub, to avoid spreading the stain.
2. Grease stains: Apply dish soap to a soft cloth, dampen with warm water, and gently wipe the stain.
3. Sticky residues: A piece of potato or a special adhesive remover based on citrus oil can be helpful. Important: always test first on an inconspicuous area!
In general: do not use abrasive cleaners, strong solvents (such as pure acetone), or abrasive cloths. Afterwards, always wipe down with a clean, slightly damp cloth to remove any residue.
If you have any further questions, I’m happy to help!

Hello Julian6,
I can only agree with Guyju and would like to add: The surface of Billy shelves is melamine-coated, which is durable but sensitive to strong chemicals. Be careful with alcohol if you want to treat large areas – always test on a small spot first!
If stains are deep-set or very stubborn, you can gently try using an eraser, such as a "magic eraser." This method often removes stains without damaging the surface. However, you should also test on an inconspicuous area first and avoid rubbing too hard.
I also think it is important to always wipe afterwards with a soft, damp cloth to ensure no residue remains that could later damage the surface.
Good luck with the cleaning, and please feel free to ask if you have any further questions!

A brief addition from my side:
Most Billy shelves have painted or melamine resin-coated surfaces that are water-resistant but can be very sensitive to solvents. My advice is to always start with mild cleaning agents and test a small area before cleaning more thoroughly.
This also fits well with the recommendations for "Magic Eraser." However, repeated use can reduce the shine, so it is best used sparingly and only on specific spots.
If stains persist despite all attempts, you can try carefully using a small amount of nail polish remover. The best approach is to apply it precisely with a soft cloth and minimal liquid, avoiding large areas.
Best regards!

From my experience, I can also recommend dish soap – it usually works best on grease stains. After a small craft project, my Billy shelves were quite dirty, but with gentle washing and a bit of care, everything came off.
Just be careful, you don’t want to soak the entire shelf – less is often more when cleaning. 🙂
