Hello everyone,
I am considering upgrading my BILLY bookshelf by replacing the wooden shelves with glass ones, but I’m unsure if the effort and investment are really worth it. My question is: Is it worthwhile to replace the standard wooden shelves in a BILLY bookshelf with glass shelves?
I imagine that glass might look more modern and make the bookshelf appear lighter. On the other hand, I’m concerned about stability, since I want to continue using the bookshelf for books and somewhat heavier decor. Additionally, I’m wondering if glass shelves are generally heat- and scratch-resistant enough to guarantee long-term use.
Has anyone had experience with such a modification or knows the typical advantages and disadvantages? Are there any tips on which type or thickness of glass would be ideal?
Thanks in advance for your assessments and advice!

Hello ROSAPLO,
Regarding your question about whether it is worth replacing the wooden shelves in the BILLY bookcase with glass, there are several points to consider. First of all, glass does have the advantage of looking elegant and light. It also allows more light to pass through, which can improve the overall appearance in darker rooms.
However, you should pay attention to the thickness of the glass: for a BILLY bookcase, I recommend a minimum thickness of 6 mm (1/4 inch) tempered glass to ensure the necessary load-bearing capacity. Regular float glass is fragile and can easily break under the weight of heavy books or decorative items. Tempered glass can also break in an accident, but it shatters into small, harmless pieces, which is a safety advantage.
Additionally, proper mounting is crucial. The standard BILLY shelves are supported by small metal pins designed for wooden shelves. For glass shelves, you need special clips or pads that securely support the glass while preventing slipping or chipping.
Regarding scratch resistance: glass is relatively prone to scratching. Especially when objects are frequently moved around, it can show visible wear. Proper care is therefore essential.
In summary:
- Very visually appealing
- Load capacity only with sufficiently thick, tempered glass
- Special mounts are necessary
- Be careful with scratches
One question for you: Do you mainly use the bookcase for books or more for displaying lighter items? This would help to better assess the required load capacity.
I hope this helps you so far!

Visually very appealingThat's exactly what I wanted to mention. Glass shelves really make an impact and make the shelving unit look lighter, which is especially beneficial in smaller rooms.

Special brackets requiredThat is very important, yes! A small tip: some users attach silicone pads under the glass. This provides extra protection for the glass at the support points and prevents it from slipping easily.
Regarding usage: if you plan to use the shelves for books, you should definitely check how much weight the glass shelves can support. Tempered glass is strong, but you don’t want to take any risks. Alternatively, you could consider having the lower shelves made of wood for heavier loads and use glass shelves on the upper levels to still achieve the desired effect.
I personally have a mix in one shelving unit and am very happy with it 🙂
If you have any more questions, feel free to ask!

For heavy books, it’s better to keep wooden shelves. That sums it up well. One more tip regarding installation: When switching to glass shelves, make sure to use the correct support brackets that are designed for the thickness of the glass. Brackets that are too small or unstable will significantly reduce the load capacity.
I also recommend using glass shelves together with a back panel to stabilize the unit. Without a back panel, the shelf can easily twist under load when using glass shelves.
If you like, I can provide a source for tempered glass panels in the recommended dimensions.
